Sony has asked modder Speclizer not to release a fan-made The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer mod, ending a project that had been in development since January and was targeting a September launch, according to [RespawnFirst](https://respawnfirst.com/sony-kills-fan-made-the-last-of-us-part-2-multiplayer-mod/).

Speclizer shared the update on social media after receiving a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment. The letter itself has not been published, and Sony has not publicly commented in the reports reviewed for this article.

“Hey everyone, as you all know, the TLOU 2 Multiplayer mod that has been in development since January was supposed to release this month,” Speclizer wrote. “Unfortunately I recently received a letter on behalf of Sony Interactive Entertainment requesting for the mod not to be released. Extremely sad that this never got to see the light of day…”

The Last of Us Part 2 multiplayer mod stopped before launch

The project began as an attempt to bring online play to The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC. Earlier footage and development updates showed a custom menu, matchmaking, loadouts, maps and competitive matches. Later updates demonstrated 4v4 play, according to coverage from VGC and PC Gamer.

That work was filling the gap left by Naughty Dog’s cancelled official multiplayer project. The Last of Us Online was abandoned in December 2023 after the studio said supporting it for years would have pulled resources away from its single-player games. The original The Last of Us’ Factions mode remains the reference point for fans who wanted the sequel to have a similar offering.

The mod was unofficial and intended for the PC version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered. Sony’s request means there will be no public release unless the company changes its position. Speclizer said the next project would be an original one rather than another modification of Sony’s intellectual property.

Why Sony stopped the fan project

The public explanation is limited to Speclizer’s statement. Neither the letter nor a detailed legal argument has been published, so claims about copyright, Patreon funding or the specific reason for Sony’s intervention remain unconfirmed.

The request came shortly before the planned September launch. That leaves the project in the same position as the official multiplayer game it was trying to replace: visible in development, playable in some form, and unavailable to the people waiting for it.

For background, the earlier The Last of Us Part II multiplayer mod coverage includes the original gameplay video and the project’s planned PC-only release. It also records why the project was limited to PC rather than PlayStation. Naughty Dog’s cancellation of The Last of Us Online explains why fans were looking to an unofficial alternative.

The Last of Us Part II Remastered is still available on PC, but the fan-made multiplayer project will not be. No new release date or alternative distribution plan has been announced.
