Ninja Theory layoffs are being reported after several developers at the Cambridge studio publicly described roles at risk of redundancy or departures. VGC reported the staff changes on 5 October, with Eurogamer also citing employees’ posts. Neither report gives a verified total for the roles affected.

The posts follow Microsoft’s 22 September announcement that two separate agreements to find new ownership for Ninja Theory had fallen through. In its official update, Xbox chief content officer Matt Booty said the company would begin consulting employees on a proposed closure while continuing to explore other options. The studio has not been confirmed as closed.

This is a staff-impact update to tbreak’s 22 September report on the proposed closure.

Ninja Theory layoffs: what employees have said

Eurogamer identified sound designer Daniele Galante, gameplay programmer Katrin Mair and programmer Stefano Prosperi among the developers posting about job uncertainty. Galante said his role was at risk after almost nine years at the studio.

The accounts describe people facing redundancy or leaving, but they do not establish how many employees have been dismissed. Xbox’s wider restructuring provides context, not a studio-level figure: its July reset announcement set out about 3,200 role eliminations across FY27, without publishing a separate Ninja Theory total.

The proposed closure leaves the studio’s future open

Microsoft’s latest statement describes a proposed closure, not a completed shutdown, and says it is still exploring other paths. UK government guidance says consultation should cover the reasons for proposed redundancies and possible alternatives; the latest reports do not give a total number of affected roles.

Ninja Theory’s next game, Senua, was announced in June for 2027. Microsoft’s September update did not say whether it will continue, move to another studio or be cancelled. Our earlier report covers Senua’s background.

How long could the UK redundancy consultation take?

There is no overall time limit. UK guidance sets a minimum 30 days before dismissals for 20–99 proposed redundancies at one workplace, and 45 days for 100 or more. Reports give no Ninja Theory count, so the relevant minimum is unknown. GOV.UK.

Does redundancy consultation guarantee that jobs will be saved?

No. UK guidance says consultation should consider ways to avoid or reduce redundancies, but it does not have to end in agreement (GOV.UK). The process gives employees a chance to discuss alternatives; it does not promise that proposed job losses will be withdrawn.
