PC players could soon have the closest thing yet to a multiplayer version of The Last of Us Part II.
Modder and YouTube creator Speclizer has shared around 25mins of gameplay from an unofficial multiplayer mod currently being developed for The Last of Us Part II on PC. The project is targeting a release sometime in September 2026, although a specific date has not been announced.
The mod has progressed considerably since Speclizer demonstrated an early and highly experimental version of the project in January. The latest footage shows a functioning multiplayer interface, matchmaking options and full competitive matches using characters, equipment and environments taken from the game.
The Last of Us Part II Multiplayer Mod Includes Eight-Player Matches
Players can access the multiplayer component through a new option integrated into The Last of Us Part II's main menu. From there, they can select a map, configure their equipment and search for other players.
The current version includes two playable locations. One is a basic testing environment called Custom Map, while the other, Houses, is based on the Hillcrest section of the campaign.
The primary mode shown in the footage is Supply Raid, with the Washington Liberation Front facing the Seraphites. Matches can reportedly support up to eight players, with each team receiving a shared pool of 20 lives. Eliminations award points that may eventually be tied to equipment or progression systems.
Listen Mode also appears to be functional, while a minimap displays enemy positions during the demonstration. However, the project remains in development, meaning these mechanics and interface elements could be adjusted before release.
The Multiplayer Mod Will Be Exclusive to PC
As an unofficial modification, the multiplayer mode will only be available for the PC version of The Last of Us Part II Remastered. PlayStation 5 owners will not be able to install or access it.
Speclizer has not yet shared final installation instructions, system requirements or details about how the mod will be distributed. Players should therefore treat September 2026 as a targeted release window rather than a guaranteed launch date.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered arrived on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store on April 3, 2025, giving modders access to a native PC version of Naughty Dog’s sequel.
Naughty Dog Cancelled Its Official Multiplayer Game
The Last of Us Part II originally launched without a successor to Factions, the multiplayer mode included with the first game. Naughty Dog later began developing a much larger standalone project known as The Last of Us Online.
That project was officially cancelled in December 2023. Naughty Dog explained that releasing and supporting the game would have required the studio to devote most of its resources to post-launch content for years, potentially forcing it to become primarily a live-service developer rather than continuing to create single-player games.
Speclizer’s mod will naturally be much smaller than the standalone experience Naughty Dog had planned. Still, the footage suggests it could give PC players a competitive multiplayer mode built around The Last of Us Part II’s combat systems, environments and factions.
