1666: Amsterdam finally launches August 25 — 16 years after it was announced

1666: Amsterdam enters Early Access on August 25 on Steam and Epic. What's in the first build, what the trailer shows, where the free prologue lives.

1666: Amsterdam, the Assassin’s Creed creator’s long-frozen action-adventure, enters Early Access on PC on August 25. Panache Digital Games confirmed the date on Monday with a new trailer for its day-and-night gameplay, covered by TheSixthAxis; the game arrives on Steam and the Epic Games Store.

Night-time witch hunt in 1666: Amsterdam, the Assassin's Creed creator's Early Access game

The trailer walks through the loop that carries the game. By day, Noa — a witch of the Zaindaris, born to be the Collector — works the streets of Amsterdam identifying the Originals, immortals hiding behind human faces. When the Esbat, the full moon, arrives, she confronts them in their true form. She brings Aaron, a cat whose head contains a man from 1999; he slips through windows and frightens people who are afraid of black cats, which is more useful than it sounds.

What’s in the August 25 Early Access build

The Early Access release covers the first piece of the campaign, roughly 15 hours of play. Panache expects about a year of updates before the game is done, each adding more of Amsterdam’s boroughs, more story and more Originals to collect.

How much does 1666: Amsterdam cost in Early Access?

No price is listed on either store yet. Panache has said the Early Access price will start low and rise as the game nears completion — a rare pricing model where patience costs money.

The date closes a long loop. 1666 was announced in 2010, bought by Ubisoft at THQ’s bankruptcy auction, and frozen while Désilets fought for years to get it back.

It resurfaced at Summer Game Fest in June with a free prologue — about 30 minutes of setup and a choice of companion — still free on both stores. Free openers are doing the rounds: Mortal Shell 2 shipped its own beta last week. tbreak’s original piece on the revival has the full backstory.

For UAE PC gamers, Steam and Epic both serve the region as usual; no AED price is listed yet, and the prologue costs nothing while you wait. The minimum spec asks for a ray-tracing GPU, an RTX 2060 Super or better, so older rigs should check before buying.

Who is Patrice Désilets?

The creative director of the first two Assassin’s Creed games and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. After the 1666 legal fight he founded Panache Digital Games, the Montreal studio behind Ancestors: The Humankind Odyssey and 1666: Amsterdam.

Why was 1666 cancelled in the first place?

Announced in 2010 while Désilets ran THQ Montreal, the project passed to Ubisoft when it bought the studio at THQ’s bankruptcy auction. Désilets was fired days after the deal closed and spent years in a legal dispute before regaining the rights to 1666.

What are the system requirements for 1666: Amsterdam?

Minimum is a 64-bit Windows 10 PC with an RTX 2060 Super, RX 6600 or Arc 580, 16GB of RAM and 25GB of SSD storage; hardware ray tracing is required. The recommended spec is an RTX 3080 Ti or RX 7700 with a Core i7-12700K or Ryzen 7 7700.
