Assassin’s Creed Creator Revives 1666: Amsterdam With a Free PC Prologue

1666: Amsterdam is officially back in development more than a decade after the rpoject was cancelled.

Panache Digital Games re-revealed the action-adventure title during Summer Game Fest 2026, with studio co-founder and Assassin's Creed creator Patrice Désilets confirming that the game will launch in Early Access later this year.

A Free 1666: Amsterdam Prologue is Available on PC

Players do not have to wait until then to get an initial look at the revived project. A free 30-min prologue is available now through Steam and the Epic Games Store, offering an early introduction to the game's world, characters and time periods.

"It's been a long time coming, and I couldn't be prouder of our team of nearly 70 talented developers in Montreal," Désilets said. "For the past six years, we have focused on one thing above all else: the game itself."

According to Désilets, the studio has been building the project as a playable experience rather than relying on pre-rendered footage or a tightly controlled showcase build. The newly released prologue is intended to give players a small preview of the broader game ahead of its Early Access release.

1666: Amsterdam Returns After More Than a Decade

1666: Amsterdam has had an unusually complicated journey. The project was originally in development at THQ Montreal before the studio’s closure. Ubisoft subsequently acquired the game and cancelled it, with Désilets later regaining the rights following a legal dispute.

The Revived Game Spans Three Different Time Periods

The revived version of the game tells a story spanning three time periods: 1666, 1999 and the present day. Its premise revolves around powerful entities known as the Originals, which have lived among humans for centuries. The story also introduces Noa Brooklyn, a character born as the Collector and raised by the Zaindaris, alongside Aaron, a character pulled from 1999 who now sees the world through the eyes of a cat.

1666: Amsterdam Is Heading Into Early Access in 2026

Panache Digital Games has not announced a specific Early Access release date beyond confirming that it will arrive later in 2026. The free prologue is currently available on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
