The beta is free on PC and current consoles
Mortal Shell 2’s open beta can be downloaded free on Steam, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. It gives players around three hours with the upcoming action game, providing a chance to assess how it runs before deciding whether to buy the full release.
According to Video Games Chronicle’s report on the open beta, access is available to all players rather than being tied to a preorder or closed test. The beta is listed under the name Mortal Shell II – Open Beta across the supported storefronts.
PC players can find the beta through its official Steam listing. PS5 and Xbox Series X|S players can download the corresponding version from their console’s digital store.
This is the first public opportunity to play Mortal Shell 2 following its announcement in June 2025. The beta covers the same three platforms confirmed when the sequel was revealed, with no previous public demo or beta offered before this release.
Progress is set to carry into the full game
Video Games Chronicle reports that progress made during the open beta will carry into Mortal Shell 2 when the full game launches. That gives the three-hour test more practical value for players who intend to continue, as their initial time with the game will contribute to the full playthrough.
The publisher has not detailed exactly which progress elements will transfer. Players therefore know that some form of continuity is planned, but there is no breakdown covering individual items, upgrades, choices, or other save data.
The carry-over promise currently comes from the beta’s promotional information rather than detailed documentation across every platform store. It should be treated as an announced feature while the publisher provides further specifics.
The three-hour slice puts the sequel’s claims to a test
The beta gives players enough time to form an early view of Mortal Shell 2’s performance and combat on their chosen platform. That is particularly useful for a sequel being promoted around wider exploration, expanded weapon systems, and changes to how combat flows.
When Mortal Shell 2 was announced, it was described as a standalone sequel that expands on the original through unrestricted combat, deeper weapon design, extensive upgrade options, and a greater emphasis on free exploration. Those descriptions remain promotional claims rather than conclusions drawn from a finished review build, but the open beta lets players examine part of that pitch directly.
Mortal Shell 2 is scheduled to launch on 20 August 2026 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. The public beta offers a relatively contained preview ahead of that release, while the reported progress transfer means participating need not amount to three hours that must be repeated from scratch.
