Game Science has released a 15-minute gameplay trailer for Black Myth: Zhong Kui, the first substantial look at the studio’s follow-up to Black Myth: Wukong.
The game was announced at Gamescom’s Opening Night Live last year, when Game Science said it was still in very early development and had no in-game footage to show. The studio’s habit is to update players on its projects every August 20 — the date Wukong itself launched in 2024 — and the first lengthy gameplay footage has now arrived on schedule.
“The trailer offers a first look at the protagonist in combat, along with a glimpse of the story,” Game Science posted on X. “As the game is still in early development, all footage was captured in-game from a work-in-progress build running at a 21:9 aspect ratio. The final release may differ.”

Black Myth: Zhong Kui: what the trailer shows
The 15 minutes introduce Zhong Kui, the ghost and demon vanquisher of Chinese folklore, in combat, and hint at the story. All of it was captured in-game from a work-in-progress build at 21:9, which the studio says may differ from the final release. Game Science’s own FAQ is upfront that “some of what we’re exploring is still experimental.”
The sequel follows the same model as Wukong: a single-player action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology, sold the same way. Game Science says it wants to keep what players loved about the first game while trying “distinctive gameplay tailored to the new protagonist, cutting-edge technical features, and differentiated approaches to storytelling.”
When does Black Myth: Zhong Kui come out?
Game Science is targeting PC and “major consoles”, with more details promised closer to release. On timing, the studio’s FAQ is candid: “First, the game has to be good enough to impress even our seasoned, seen-it-all colleagues. So yes, that pretty much guarantees it won’t be quick.”
A release window has not been announced. Game Science has confirmed only PC and “major consoles” so far, with more platform details promised closer to launch.
Who is Zhong Kui in Chinese mythology?
Zhong Kui is a legendary figure in Chinese folklore: a scholar who passed the imperial examinations but was rejected by the emperor over his appearance, died in anger, and was later appointed a supernatural official in charge of driving away ghosts and demons. His image was traditionally hung in homes as a talisman against evil.
Will Black Myth: Zhong Kui be a single-player game like Wukong?
Yes. Game Science has confirmed it will be a proper single-player action RPG following the same business model as before — a premium one-time purchase rather than a live-service game, matching Black Myth: Wukong’s approach.
What platforms is Black Myth: Zhong Kui coming to?
PC and major consoles have been confirmed, with more details promised closer to release. For reference, Black Myth: Wukong launched on PC and PlayStation 5, with an Xbox Series X|S version following later.
