Apple Mail on Mac may lose access to Microsoft 365 work accounts as Microsoft phases out Exchange Web Services (EWS) in Exchange Online starting today. The rollout is tenant-by-tenant, so the change will not affect every organisation at once, MacRumors reports.

Microsoft’s latest guidance says enforcement begins in October. Tenants that leave EWS disabled or unconfigured may lose access as the rollout reaches them. Microsoft’s full shutdown date is 1 April 2027.

Apple Mail on Mac and Microsoft 365: who is affected?

The change concerns Exchange Online, the service behind Microsoft 365 work accounts. MacRumors reports that Apple Mail and Calendar on Mac still rely on EWS.

Apple’s deployment guidance says it is working with Microsoft to move Mail, Calendar, Contacts, Notes and Reminders on Mac to Graph in a future macOS 27 update, with no release date announced. The company has outlined the broader macOS 27 rollout.

Microsoft’s retirement has started, but Apple’s Graph replacement has not shipped. The EWS change does not affect iPhone or iPad in the same way; those devices use Exchange ActiveSync. It also excludes companies running on-premises Exchange servers, Heise reports.

What can Microsoft 365 administrators do?

Microsoft’s admin guidance uses the tenant-level EWSEnabled setting and an application ID allow list called EWSAllowedAppIDs. Admins who still need EWS should review usage and the allow list; enabling EWS without a populated list may still block applications. Mac users cannot change this in Mail.

UAE employees should ask their organisation’s IT team whether its Microsoft 365 tenant still depends on EWS for Apple Mail on Mac; Microsoft says the rollout is tenant by tenant, not a UAE-wide cutoff.

If access stops, IT can restore permitted access during the transition or move staff to a client such as Outlook for Mac. Neither extends the deadline: Microsoft says EWS will be fully disabled in Exchange Online from 1 April 2027.

What should I do if Apple Mail stops connecting to my work account?

Contact your organisation’s IT team. EWS access is controlled by the Microsoft 365 tenant, so an administrator must decide whether to restore access or move staff to an approved alternative such as Outlook for Mac.

Will the change affect Apple Mail on iPhone or iPad?

The EWS retirement targets Mac integration with Exchange Online. iPhone and iPad use Exchange ActiveSync for Apple’s system integration, so this change does not affect them in the same way, Apple says.

When will Apple add Microsoft Graph support to its Mac apps?

Apple says Graph support is planned for a future macOS 27 update, but has not announced a date. Microsoft’s separate EWS shutdown is scheduled for 1 April 2027, according to its Exchange Team guidance.
