macOS 27 'Golden Gate' marks the final transition to Apple Silicon, completely dropping support for Intel-based Macs. Owners of older Intel MacBooks and iMacs in the UAE will no longer receive major OS updates and should plan an upgrade to an M-series Mac to access the new Siri AI features.

Apple's WWDC 2026 keynote has sent a clear message to anyone still holding onto an Intel-powered Mac: the road ends here. While macOS 27 'Golden Gate' brings a suite of futuristic features, it's the first version of the operating system that refuses to install on any machine without an Apple Silicon chip. As reported by PCMag Middle East, this creates a hardware 'cliff' that will affect thousands of UAE Mac owners still running Intel machines.

The Intel cliff hits UAE creative studios hard

In the UAE, where many creative studios and home offices still rely on 2019 and 2020 Intel iMacs and MacBook Pros, this shift is particularly significant. Your current machine won't stop working tomorrow, but it's now on a 'legacy' path. Security updates will eventually dwindle, and you'll miss out on the refined 'Liquid Glass' UI improvements and the headline feature: Siri AI.

The new Siri, built on Apple's partnership with Google's Gemini, transforms the voice assistant into a chatbot-style interface that can handle complex queries, manage files across your Apple ecosystem, and resume conversations between devices. However, because it relies on the Neural Engine found exclusively in M-series chips, Intel Macs are simply left behind.

Perhaps more concerning for professionals in Dubai and Abu Dhabi relying on older software: while Rosetta 2 still allows Intel apps to run on Apple Silicon in macOS 27, industry expectations suggest this compatibility layer may disappear entirely by macOS 28. The window to transition is closing.

What to upgrade to and how much it costs

If you're moving off an Intel Mac, the UAE market currently offers several strong options. However, with the arrival of Siri AI, the old advice of '8GB is enough' is officially dead. Apple's AI features demand more memory, making 16GB the new minimum for serious use.

The portable choice: The MacBook Air M3 (13-inch) starts at approximately AED 4,599 [VERIFY] at major UAE retailers. We strongly recommend upgrading to 16GB of unified memory (usually an additional AED 800) to ensure the local AI processing doesn't bottleneck your system.

The power choice: For those coming from an Intel MacBook Pro 16, the MacBook Pro M3 or M4 (14-inch or 16-inch) is the logical step. Prices start around AED 6,899 [VERIFY] at retailers like the Apple Store UAE, Sharaf DG, and Jumbo Electronics.

With our budget MacBook rumours suggesting Apple might launch a sub-AED 2,000 option, it's worth considering whether to wait. However, that machine would likely lack the Neural Engine needed for Siri AI.

Golden Gate's standout features beyond AI

Beyond Siri AI, Safari is receiving its most useful update in years. Background page-change alerts let you track price drops on UAE retail sites without keeping tabs active — perfect for monitoring deals at Virgin Megastore or Noon. The new automated tab grouping and swipe-down-to-refresh (also coming to Calendar, Mail, and News) modernise the browsing experience.

For parents, the enhanced controls are genuinely useful. 'Ask to Browse' requires children to request approval for new websites, whilst optional blurring of inappropriate content in Photos, Messages, and FaceTime provides better protection. You can also set usage limits on groups of apps rather than individual applications.

The refined 'Liquid Glass' interface introduces a transparency slider in System Settings, smaller window corner radii, and more consistent toolbars. It's a visual evolution rather than revolution, but the changes feel more cohesive than previous iterations.

macOS 27 availability and upgrade timeline

macOS 27 'Golden Gate' launches on 15 September 2026, with a public beta expected in June and a developer beta already available (though not recommended for daily use). The update is free for all compatible Apple Silicon Macs.

Current UAE pricing for new Macs varies by retailer, but expect to pay around AED 4,599 for a base MacBook Air M3 and AED 6,899 for a MacBook Pro. Given the memory requirements for AI features, budget at least AED 800 extra for the 16GB upgrade.

Apple offers trade-in programmes through the UAE Apple Store, though specific values for Intel Macs haven't been updated following this announcement. Check with local retailers for competitive trade-in deals as the launch approaches.
