John Ternus LinkedIn profile still shows his old role
Ternus’s LinkedIn page identifies him as vice president of Hardware Engineering, with Apple listed as his current employer. It says he joined the company in July 2001 and lists a mechanical engineering degree from the University of Pennsylvania.
The profile also shows more than 500 connections, but no posts. That is a fairly quiet page for the person now running the world’s most valuable consumer technology company, although LinkedIn activity has never been part of the Apple CEO job description.
What John Ternus did before becoming Apple CEO
Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and became vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2013. He joined Apple’s executive team as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in 2021, according to Apple’s official biography.
During his time in hardware, Ternus worked across the iPad, AirPods, iPhone, Mac and Apple Watch product lines. Apple also credits him with work on materials, durability and repairability. Before Apple, he was a mechanical engineer at Virtual Research Systems.
Apple announced in April that Ternus would replace Cook as CEO on 1 September 2026. Cook became executive chairman, while Johny Srouji took over Ternus’s former hardware role as chief hardware officer. Ternus’s LinkedIn profile has yet to reflect the change.
The new CEO inherits a company facing pressure to make up ground in artificial intelligence while managing supply-chain and government relationships that were central to Cook’s tenure. His profile may eventually receive an update. For now, it remains a record of the job he had before Apple gave him the larger one.
