Android users may soon be able to use a connected game controller to move a mouse-style cursor around their phone or tablet, rather than repeatedly reaching for the touchscreen. Android Headlines reports that code strings point to a native “Gamepad mouse” feature, although there’s no confirmed release date.

The report cites an Android Authority discovery in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1. The strings include “Gamepad mouse” and “Use a connected gamepad to control the cursor”. Those references suggest work on the feature, not a finished option that users can switch on today.

A controller for more than games

Android already lets connected gamepads navigate parts of its interface. The proposed change would add free mouse-style movement, with a cursor that could reach beyond the controls accessible through existing gamepad navigation. Android Headlines describes potential actions such as launching an app or closing a floating app window.

The distinction is useful when a device sits beyond comfortable touching distance. With a tablet propped up for a gaming session, a controller that also handles interface navigation could reduce the need to put it down between tasks. It would be a convenience improvement rather than a change to how a game itself plays.

Google’s controller-support documentation already lists touchpad support among Android’s gamepad capabilities, alongside haptics, lightbar control, and other inputs. Android Headlines notes that controllers with touchpads can already offer mouse-style control, while third-party mapping apps provide another workaround. A native option could make similar navigation available without relying on those approaches.

That doesn’t mean every connected controller will gain identical controls. The report doesn’t establish a compatibility list, the final settings interface, or which devices would receive the feature. There is also no evidence here that it would add controller support to games that don’t already offer it.

Useful between mobile gaming sessions

For UAE players who use an Android phone or tablet for mobile or cloud gaming, the potential benefit is straightforward: fewer trips back to the touchscreen to navigate the device around a session. The reported feature concerns Android’s interface, however, not cloud-streaming performance, latency, or access to additional services.

It also shouldn’t be confused with an app redesign such as Google’s recent Android search-bar changes. This proposal concerns how a connected accessory controls the interface. Android customisation tools such as PixelBoard’s voice-typing features address a different input task.

The missing detail is when, or whether, Google will enable the option. References in beta software can reveal development work without guaranteeing a stable release. No UAE-specific rollout or device support has been confirmed in the report, so there’s no reason to buy a new controller on the strength of these strings alone.

Can a game controller act as a mouse on Android today?

Android Headlines describes existing options involving controllers with built-in touchpads or third-party mapping apps. The reported native Gamepad mouse feature isn’t confirmed as available to users.

Will this make touchscreen-only games support a controller?

The evidence concerns cursor control across Android’s interface. It doesn’t establish new controller compatibility for individual games, which remains separate from navigating the phone or tablet.
