Google has confirmed that Googlebook detachables, tablets with removable keyboards, are coming soon. 9to5Google reports the company said so at Android Dev Summit 2026, calling them the next form factor after clamshells and convertibles.
What Google said about Googlebook detachables
The news came in Wednesday’s developer keynote. Google described how the platform reaches across screen types.
Google said Googlebook covers large screens in these forms:
spans across large screen form factors from clamshells, convertibles, and soon detachables.
9to5Google says the reveal isn’t surprising, given leaks earlier this year, but doesn’t include a date, price or model name for a detachable.
Where the first detachable stands
Four of the five devices launched during the Googlebook announcement are clamshells: the Asus Googlebook 14, Dell XPS Googlebook, HP Googlebook 14 and Lenovo Googlebook 15. Our Googlebook price and models story covers the launch line-up.
The Acer Googlebook 14 at $899 is the only convertible. It offers laptop, tent and tablet modes.
9to5Google expects the first detachable to come from Lenovo. A July leak showed a tablet with a detachable keyboard, a kickstand and a Glowbar next to the camera. It leaked alongside a laptop smaller than the 15-inch model, which our Lenovo Googlebook 15 leak story covered.
9to5Google also points to day-one limits. Fullscreen apps can open in portrait tablet mode. The homescreen, Overview and app tray only work in landscape. The site says that suggests Google still has work to do before launching a pure detachable.
What it means for tablet buyers
9to5Google says Googlebook OS could give tablets a more desktop-like experience than Android. It also asks what operating system high-end Android tablets will use from here.
Neither Google nor 9to5Google compares the detachables with the iPad or Microsoft’s Surface. That comparison will only be possible once we know a model, price, and UAE availability.
