Elon Musk confirmed on X that Grok Bot’s overnight jumps in weekly usage, from as low as 50% to 100%, weren’t a glitch. According to TechCrunch, SpaceX throttled the agent app because serving it costs too much.

Over Halloween weekend, some Grok Bot users woke to find their weekly limits used up, even though they hadn’t touched the app overnight. Some users posted on X about the jump. On Sunday, 1 November, Musk replied to a user’s question with the reason.

The cost of serving Grok Bot was unsustainably high relative to revenue

He hasn’t said how subscribers’ limits will work from here, and he didn’t raise the change on his main feed. Instead, he kept promoting Grok Bot as a way to buy family gifts.

Grok Bot is SpaceX’s growth story. Musk recently called it “the fastest growth of a product that I’ve ever seen in my life” in a YouTube short. A filing last month showed AI now makes up 52% of company income. Its renamed “Super Intelligence” division made a $431 million profit.

In May, Anthropic took over SpaceX’s Colossus 1, with 220,000 NVIDIA GPUs, and doubled Claude Code’s usage limits. Grok Bot itself now runs on Anthropic’s Claude, with Midjourney and Suno next.
