Inside the Meta humanoid robot

The robot is internally codenamed Max. According to The Information, Meta built it in roughly three months with help from Fourier, a Chinese robotics company.

The report says Max weighs roughly 106 lbs (about 48 kg) and stands about 1.5 metres tall. It reportedly has a display that shows facial expressions, a built-in speaker and hands designed to pick up small objects. Inside, Meta reportedly used Nvidia’s Jetson Thor chips.

Max 2 is already in the works

The Information says Meta started work on a second prototype, Max 2, in September. The report says the new version changes the design of the torso and hands. It also adds a projector and extra sensors to help the robot handle stairs.

According to the report, there’s no launch date for a mass-market version of Max. The report doesn’t give a price or say whether Meta would sell it.

Meta’s wider push into robotics

Engadget says Meta’s robotics effort began as early as last year. Bloomberg reported then that the company created a team to build robot hardware, with household chores as the eventual goal. Earlier this year, Meta also acquired a startup that builds AI for robots.

Rivals are chasing the same market. Tbreak reported that Nvidia pushed physical-AI tools and a humanoid robot for research. Tbreak also reported that Tesla is making several hundred Optimus robots a week, with hands and assembly still a problem. Chinese carmakers are turning to humanoid robots as slowing sales squeeze margins.

Robots may also give Meta a new place to use its AI work. Leaked recordings reportedly showed Zuckerberg admitting that Meta’s AI progress is slower than expected, while he still backed more investment.

Neither report mentions UAE or wider Middle East availability.
