Commodore has unveiled the Callback 8020, a retro-styled flip phone designed to sit somewhere between a basic feature phone and a modern smartphone. It supports useful services such as WhatsApp, navigation, ridesharing and music streaming, but blocks social media platforms and web browsers at the operation-system level.
The Callback 8020 starts at $499.00, and will be available to pre-order from June 30, 2026. Commodore is targeting a winter 2026 shipping window, although an exact delivery date has not been confirmed.
A flip phone with selected smartphone features
The Callback 8020 features a 3.25-inch internal display with a 480 x 640 resolution, a MediaTek Helio G81 processor, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It supports physical dual-SIM connectivity, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi and mobile hotspot functionality, but does not support 5G or eSIM.
Despite its keypad-focused design, the internal display is technically a touchscreen. Touch input is disabled by default but can be activated when an application requires it. Text messages can instead be entered through predictive T9-style typing or the phone’s speech-to-text service.
A simplified external display shows information including the time, battery level and signal status. Five coloured notification LEDs provide alerts without repeatedly lighting up the main screen, while closing the handset creates a deliberate stopping point between interactions.
Other features include a 48MP Sony rear camera, an autofocus front camera, an FM radio, a headphone jack and a removable battery. The handset is rated IP44 for protection against splashes, although it is not waterproof. Commodore has not provided a final battery-life estimate but expects several days of standby time.

Commodore games, SID ringtones and bundled earphones
The Callback 8020 leans heavily into Commodore’s computing history. It includes a selection of Commodore 64 games, Snake and ringtones based on music produced using the C64’s SID sound chip. It can also remotely control a Commodore 64 Ultimate and its lighting when both devices are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
For audio, Commodore says the built-in DAC supports high-resolution and lossless files. A pair of custom in-ear monitors from FiiO will be included alongside a USB-C charging cable, removable battery, printed user guide and sticker packs.
The handset will be offered in ProtoPET White, SX Silver and BASIC Beige, alongside a translucent blue Starlight Edition priced at around $550. A $640 Founders Edition adds a gold finish and a 24-karat gold-plated Commodore key, as well as additional presentation packaging and a protective case.
Commodore Callback 8020 price and availability
Pre-orders open on June 30 at 10am CEST, corresponding to 12pm in the UAE. Orders will be charged upfront, with Commodore targeting worldwide shipping and calculating delivery charges at checkout.
Dedicated UAE pricing and local retail availability have not been announced. Commodore also notes that some promotional images are renders and that the phone’s specifications, design and app compatibility may change before release.
The Callback 8020 follows the relaunched company’s Commodore 64 Ultimate, an FPGA-based recreation of the classic home computer. The Commodore brand was acquired in 2025 by Christian “Peri Fractic” Simpson, who is now serving as the company’s president and CEO.
FAQ
Can the Commodore Callback 8020 access Instagram or Facebook?
No. Social media applications and web browsers are blocked at the system level, and Commodore says these restrictions cannot be turned off.
Does the Commodore Callback 8020 run Android apps?
It uses Sailfish OS rather than Android but can run most Android applications through a compatibility environment. It does not include Google Play Services, and some banking or security-sensitive apps may not work.
How much does the Commodore Callback 8020 cost?
Standard versions start at $499.99 before tax. The translucent Starlight Edition costs around $550, while the gold Founders Edition is priced at $640.
When will the Commodore Callback 8020 be released?
Pre-orders begin on June 30, 2026, at 12pm UAE time. Commodore is targeting winter 2026 for the start of shipping, but has not provided an exact delivery date.
Social media and browsers are permanently blocked
The Callback's defining feature is that social media apps and web browsers cannot be installed or accessed. Commodore says these restrictions cannot be disabled, arguing that blocking social apps alone would be ineffective when the same feeds and services remain accessible through a browser.
Email and workplace communication apps such as Slack and Microsoft Teams are not offered through the phone's Commostore app marketplace, although they are treated differently from browsers and social platforms, which are directly blocked. Compatible APK files can otherwise be sideloaded, subject to the phone's restrictions.
The phone runs a customised version of Jolla's Linux-based Sailfish OS rather than Android. Commodore claims it can run more than 99% of Android apps through a sandboxed compatibility environment, although apps heavily dependent on Google Play services, including some banking apps, may not function correctly. Google Play Services and the Google Play Store are not included.
WhatsApp comes preinstalled, while Signal, Telegram and WeChat are also listed as compatible. Apple Messages can reportedly be accessed using a third-party bridge such as OpenBubbles, although this requires initial setup using a Mac and remains dependent on continued third-party platform support.
