Android 17 Google Account unlock could let people recover a forgotten phone PIN without wiping locally stored photos and app data, according to an APK teardown of Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5. Google has not announced the feature, and it is not active in the beta build examined by Android Authority.

The proposed option is called “Unlock with Google Account” and appears in Android’s Device unlock settings. That would change the current recovery trade-off. A user who forgets the screen lock can generally regain access by factory-resetting the phone, then signing back in to the Google account protected by Factory Reset Protection. The reset removes locally stored data that has not been backed up. Android Authority says Google previously supported Google-account-assisted pattern recovery, but removed it around Android 4.4, leaving the factory reset as the practical route.
The report comes from code found in Android 17 QPR2 Beta 5. Google’s Android 17 QPR 2 release notes describe the build as a pre-release update with fixes and improvements, not as confirmation of this recovery feature. Android Authority’s APK teardown also warns that code discovered in development builds can be changed or dropped before release.
The recovery option would still have a security cost
An account-based unlock could prevent an avoidable data loss, but it would also make access to the linked Google account more sensitive. Anyone with the phone and the account credentials could potentially bypass the screen lock if Google ships the flow as shown, which explains why the option may remain disabled by default.
There is no confirmed release date, supported-device list or indication that the feature will reach phones outside Google’s own Pixel testing programme. Android 17 is still in development, so users should not treat the option as a recovery method they can rely on today.
