Apple has found a way to give the iPhone 18 Pro Max a larger battery without letting the phone breach the single-cell shipping limit before it reaches customers. The iPhone 18 Pro Max battery is kept below 20 watt-hours during manufacturing and transport, then the full capacity becomes available after activation.
How Apple keeps the iPhone 18 Pro Max battery within shipping rules
Apple’s support document says single-cell batteries above 20Wh face extra shipping requirements in most countries and regions. Android Authority reports that the iPhone 18 Pro Max uses a 5,391mAh cell in global models, putting it above the roughly 5,300mAh capacity associated with a 20Wh limit at typical smartphone voltages.
The workaround is firmware rather than a second cell. Apple says the battery is limited to below 20Wh from manufacture through transport, with the cap removed when the phone is activated. The company’s official support instructions describe the battery as safe for shipping and air travel; the limit exists to meet transport requirements.
Could Android phones use the same battery workaround?
Many Android phones already use dual-cell designs to get around limits applied to individual cells. Apple’s approach could let manufacturers keep a simpler single-cell layout while shipping phones with larger batteries in the US, Europe and other markets. That is a possibility, not a commitment from any Android brand.
The feature also works in reverse. Owners sending an iPhone 18 Pro Max for repair, trade-in or return can open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone and choose Prepare to Ship. The phone discharges below 20Wh and applies an 80 per cent charging limit for 14 days. A new, unactivated phone is already limited during transport and does not need the setting.
Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro Max can provide up to 45 hours of video playback.
