Apple is reportedly testing a smart home display that could identify who is looking at it and show personalised information, with a launch possible as early as October. The same face-recognition approach may also reach the iPhone Duo, according to reporting from Bloomberg, cited by Android Authority.
Apple smart display could make the home screen personal
The Apple smart display is said to be in testing at employees’ homes. The device reportedly has Wi-Fi, a camera and microphones, alongside its own home screen, widgets and clock faces. Its software is described as a blend of iOS, tvOS and watchOS, with Siri AI handling requests across apps such as Notes and Reminders.
The company is also reported to have been working on two displays, codenamed J490 and J491. That follows earlier coverage of Apple’s Personal Hub plans, which described a Siri-powered home device aimed at controlling smart-home features and surfacing information around the house.
The camera could identify a registered household member and adjust the information shown on screen. That would be similar to Google’s Face Match feature on the Nest Hub Max, which can surface personal calendars, notes and other information for the person in front of the display. The Apple smart display would reportedly use machine learning rather than the dedicated sensors found in Face ID.
Could the same face recognition reach iPhone Duo?
The report also links the feature to Apple’s first foldable phone. The iPhone Duo’s outer display has a punch-hole camera that could support software-based face unlock, while the under-display camera on the inner screen may be less suitable because of its lower image quality.
Apple has already confirmed the iPhone Duo, but it has not announced this face-unlock feature or confirmed that the smart display is launching next month. The timing and hardware details remain attributed to Bloomberg’s reporting, as Android Authority’s report explains. Apple’s home-device plans also sit alongside its broader Siri AI work, including reported support for third-party models.
