Apple is asking iPhone Duo buyers to judge its folding screen over time, with hardware engineering VP Tom Marieb saying the phone’s matte nano-texture finish should keep the crease less visible as the hinge ages. The iPhone Duo launches on October 23 and starts at AED 8,499 in the UAE.

iPhone Duo crease: Apple’s promise is about visibility over time

Marieb told TechRadar that Apple chose a matte finish partly because glossy screens make small changes around a hinge easier to see. The nano-texture surface scatters reflections, which should make the display more forgiving if the hinge’s shape changes with extended use.

“Hold us accountable to that, please. The choice of a matte finish — apart from it being beautiful — is part of that equation.”

That is a claim about how the crease will look, not a promise that the fold line will disappear. Apple’s newsroom says the inner display uses custom adhesives that let its layers glide past one another, while a nano-textured cover layer is designed to protect the surface. Apple says that cover material has up to 40% higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry.

The iPhone Duo hinge is tuned to avoid feeling loose

Marieb also said Apple spent considerable time tuning the hinge’s torque profile so it feels solid when closed, open or held halfway. The iPhone Duo crease is therefore being treated as both an optical issue and a mechanical one. He compared the intended feel to a high-end car door, while also saying the phone should not feel floppy during half-folded use.

The comments add detail to Apple’s launch claims, but they are not a fold-cycle rating or a long-term test result. Buyers will have to assess that part themselves once the iPhone Duo has been in daily use. Apple’s official launch announcement confirms the 7.6-inch inner display and the nano-texture finish, while 9to5Mac’s summary of the interview carries the hinge and crease comments in full.

The durability question matters more at AED 8,499, particularly with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 already giving UAE buyers an established alternative.
