iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold8: Which foldable makes sense in the UAE?

Apple’s first foldable is finally official, but it has a direct rival already selling in UAE stores. The iPhone Duo costs AED 8,499 and arrives on 23 October. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 is on sale now for AED 7,199, and it is Samsung’s eighth attempt at a foldable, though with a very iPhone Duo-inspired design this year.

The screens are the same size, but the phones are not

Both fold out to 7.6 inches and both hit 3,000 nits. The difference is more on the outside. Samsung reshaped the Fold this year, and the cover screen is now a 5.5-inch 10:16 panel built deliberately for scrolling social feeds, with the inner display at 4:3 for video and reading. Apple’s outer screen is 5.4 inches and functions more conventionally.

Samsung is also making a point of the physical dimensions: 201g and 4.5mm unfolded, which it calls the world’s lightest fold. Apple has not published a weight or thickness for the Duo, which is unusual and worth noting when the direct comparison is a phone marketed almost entirely on being thin and light. Where Apple pulls ahead on paper is durability rating: IP68 against the Fold8’s IP48. Both are dust- and water-resistant, but Apple’s rating covers full dust-ingress protection, whereas Samsung’s does not, which matters more here than in most markets.

Neither of them has a telephoto camera

This is the surprise. Apple gave the Duo a 48MP Main with a 2x crop and a 48MP Ultra Wide, and no dedicated telephoto — a real gap on a phone that costs AED 8,499. Samsung did exactly the same thing: 50MP Wide, 50MP Ultra Wide, and a 2x optical quality zoom rather than a telephoto lens.

If you want a folding phone with proper optical reach, neither of these is it. Samsung reserves that for the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra, with its 200MP wide camera and 30x digital zoom, and Apple has nothing above the Duo. Anyone who shoots at a distance is better served by the iPhone 18 Pro Max, which has a 48MP telephoto and costs AED 3,000 less than the Duo.

Battery: Apple claims more, in a way that is hard to compare

Samsung quotes a 4,800mAh cell and up to 26 hours of video playback. Apple does not publish battery capacity, quoting 31 hours of video on the inner screen, 44 on the outer and 24 hours mixed use.

Taken at face value, Apple is ahead, but these are two different test methodologies, and Apple’s most flattering number comes from the smaller outer screen. Treat the gap as smaller than the numbers suggest until both are tested side by side.

Unlocking, SIMs, and the things that will annoy you

The Duo drops Face ID entirely; Touch ID moves into the side button, a first for a flagship iPhone in years. Samsung never had FaceID and keeps the fingerprint sensor on the power button like previous Fold phones.

The bigger practical difference in the UAE is the SIM tray. As with other iPhone models from last year and this year, the Duo is eSIM-only, so a physical SIM from a second line or a travel SIM is not an option. Etisalat by e& and du both handle eSIM fine, but the transfer is an extra step. The Fold8 takes a physical SIM.

Which one should you buy?

Buy the Galaxy Z Fold8 if you want a foldable now rather than in late October, if you want to save AED 1,300, or you need a physical SIM. It is also the more mature product here — eight generations of hinge engineering against Apple’s first — and Samsung has already solved some problems that might be new to Apple.

Buy the iPhone Duo if you are already inside Apple’s ecosystem and moving out of it would cost you more than AED 1,300 in re-bought apps, watch pairing and earbuds. The IP68 rating and Apple’s software exclusives — Split View, Duo Preview, Smart Take, Duo FaceTime — are the genuine draws, along with an Apple Pencil arriving later this year.
