iPhone Duo is official: Apple’s first foldable is AED 8,499 in the UAE

Apple’s first foldable is real; it is called iPhone Duo, and it costs AED 8,499 in the UAE. Pre-orders open on Friday 16 October and it reaches customers on Friday 23 October — five weeks after the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max go on sale. It comes in star white and night sky.

The UAE is in the first wave, with more than 70 countries pre-ordering on 16 October and another 28 following on 30 October. That answers the question that mattered most locally: no months-long wait, no grey-market-only window.

AED 8,499 is exactly as expensive as it sounds

That is AED 3,000 more than an iPhone 18 Pro Max at AED 5,499, and it matches to the dirham what Apple charges for a 2TB iPhone 17 Pro Max. It also lands about AED 1,300 above the Galaxy Z Fold8, which sells in the UAE from AED 7,199 and includes a telephoto camera the Duo does not have. Apple is asking a premium for a first-generation device against an incumbent on its eighth.

Two displays, and the crease question

Closed, the 5.4-inch outer Super Retina XDR display carries 90 per cent of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro, so this is not a phone that becomes useless folded. Opened, the 7.6-inch inner display is 50 per cent larger than the 18 Pro Max, and Apple says it is the thinnest iPhone it has ever made in that state. Both panels share an aspect ratio, so content scales rather than reflows awkwardly.

Apple’s answer to the crease is a nano-texture cover layer — a matte finish that cuts glare and, in Apple’s words, minimises crease visibility. Note the wording: minimises, not eliminates. The cover layer is a custom polymer Apple claims is up to 40 per cent stiffer than industry alternatives, with high-strength glass above and below the folding panel and custom adhesives that let the layers glide past each other like pages in a book. Both displays run ProMotion, Always On and 3,000 nits peak outdoor brightness — which matters more here than in most markets.

The hinge uses more than 100 components, with a 3D-printed cover in recycled titanium and a grade 5 titanium enclosure. It is IP68 rated, and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front is claimed to be three times more scratch-resistant than the previous generation.

Touch ID is back, and there is still no telephoto

The two most-repeated leaks were both correct. Authentication is Touch ID built into the side button, not Face ID — the first flagship iPhone without Face ID since the iPhone X — and the camera system is a 48MP Fusion Main plus a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, with no dedicated telephoto lens. You get an integrated optical-quality 2x crop from the main sensor, which is not the same as the 18 Pro’s optical reach.

What the folding design buys you instead is a set of camera behaviours no other iPhone can do. Duo Preview puts a live preview on the outer display so your subject can see their own framing while you shoot with the better rear cameras — which also means every selfie can now be a rear-camera selfie. Smart Take uses on-device models to fire the shutter when everyone is actually posing. Duo FaceTime mirrors a call to the outer screen so the people next to you can join without crowding the phone. Kid Cue plays Peanuts animations on the outer display to get a toddler to look at the lens. A FaceTime camera also sits hidden beneath the inner display.

Video goes to 4K120 in Dolby Vision on the main camera, with Cinematic effects applicable after capture at up to 60fps, and the phone props itself up for time-lapses without a tripod.

Split View: two apps on an iPhone, finally

iOS 27 has been rebuilt around the hardware. Lock Screen controls, the Dock and app navigation move to the side to preserve vertical space; the Dynamic Island is redesigned to sit vertically along the edge of either display; and opening the device shows two Home Screen pages with a scrolling Today View of widgets on the left. Content reorients as you fold, turn or flip the phone.

The headline software feature is Split View, which puts two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time, along with app pairs you can save and reopen, and two windows of the same app. StandBy also works on either display even when the phone is not charging, with new Calendar and Weather faces. Netflix, Zoom and Slack are already adapted.

A20 Pro, dual batteries and 44 hours of video

It runs the same A20 Pro as the iPhone 18 Pro — 2nm, 6-core CPU up to 20 per cent faster than A19 Pro, 7-core GPU up to 40 per cent faster, dual 16-core Neural Engine with double the AI compute, 50 per cent more memory bandwidth — fed by a custom vapour chamber connected directly to the chip package. Apple claims up to 35 per cent better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro.

Battery is the surprise. There is one high-energy cell on each side of the fold, balanced by software to behave as a single battery: 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, 44 hours on the outer, and 24 hours of usage when both are used equally. Fast charging hits 50 per cent in around 20 minutes wired, or 30 minutes on MagSafe or Qi2.

Connectivity is Apple’s own N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread, plus the C2 modem. It is eSIM-only worldwide, with e& and du both named by Apple — a non-issue in the UAE, which has been eSIM-only on iPhone for years.

Should you buy it?

At AED 8,499 this is a want, not an upgrade. If your phone matters most as a camera, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is AED 3,000 cheaper with better optical reach. If it matters most as a screen — streaming, gaming, reading, two apps at once on a Dubai commute — the Duo is the first foldable with Apple’s software ecosystem behind it, and the outer display is usable enough that you are not carrying a compromise half the time.

The unknown is the hinge, and no press release can answer that. It is a first-generation folding mechanism at the highest price Apple has ever charged for a phone, and the honest advice for anyone who is not an early adopter by temperament is to let it run for a few months.
