AED 3,000 apart, and they are not competing for the same buyer
The iPhone Duo costs AED 8,499. The iPhone 18 Pro Max costs AED 5,499. That is an AED 3,000 gap before you touch the storage options, and it holds all the way up the range.
| iPhone Duo | iPhone 18 Pro Max | |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | AED 8,499 | AED 5,499 |
| 512GB | AED 9,349 | AED 6,349 |
| 1TB | AED 11,049 | AED 8,049 |
| 2TB | AED 13,599 | AED 10,599 |
Buying the fold instead of the biggest Pro costs you AED 3,000 at every tier. Put another way: the entry Duo costs more than a 1TB 18 Pro Max. Every price above is Apple UAE’s own, and the full Apple UAE price list has the rest of the line-up.

What you give up to get the fold
Three things, and they are the ones photographers and long-time iPhone owners will feel every day.
There is no dedicated telephoto lens. The Duo has a 48MP Fusion Main and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, with a 2x optical-quality crop from the main sensor standing in for zoom. The 18 Pro Max has three 48MP cameras including a real telephoto. On a phone that costs AED 8,499, that absence is the single hardest thing to explain, and it is not a software update away from being fixed.
There is no variable aperture. The most genuinely new camera feature Apple shipped this year — a main sensor that physically changes aperture for depth-of-field control and low light — is on the Pro phones only.
There is no Face ID. Apple moved authentication to Touch ID in the side button. It is fast and it works with wet hands, which is not nothing in a Dubai summer, but it is a step back if you have spent five years unlocking your phone by looking at it, and it means no Face ID for Apple Pay authentication the way you are used to.
Worth adding a fourth, quieter one: Apple has not published a weight or thickness for the Duo. For a category where those two numbers decide whether a phone is pleasant to carry, that silence is conspicuous. We will update this piece when Apple publishes them.
What you get instead
A 7.6-inch inner Super Retina XDR display with a nano-texture finish, 3,000 nits and ProMotion, plus a 5.4-inch outer screen that works as an ordinary phone when folded. The nano-texture matters more here than on any other iPhone: a large glossy panel held at reading distance is a mirror in UAE daylight.
Battery is the surprise. Apple rates the Duo at 44 hours of video playback on the outer display, which is *more* than the 18 Pro Max’s 45-hour figure gets you in practice on a phone that size, and 31 hours on the big inner screen. Mixed use — the number most people should actually look at — is 24 hours.
The build is Grade 5 titanium with Ceramic Shield 2 on both sides, IP68, and a hinge Apple says runs to more than 100 components. The A20 Pro with its vapour chamber delivers 35% better sustained performance than the 17 Pro, with CPU up 20% and GPU up 40%.
Then the software you cannot get anywhere else: Split View, Duo Preview, Smart Take, Kid Cue and Duo FaceTime, with Apple Pencil support arriving later this year. If you actually work on your phone — reviewing documents, editing, two apps at once on a commute — this is the part worth AED 3,000, and nothing on the Pro Max replicates it.
What is identical on both
Both run the same A20 Pro silicon, so raw speed is not a differentiator. Both are eSIM only in the UAE, so neither takes a physical SIM and both need a transfer with etisalat by e& or du rather than a tray swap. Both ship with Ceramic Shield 2 and IP68. Both run iOS 27.
And both carry the same regional caveat: Apple Intelligence still does not support Arabic. It launches in 16 languages and Arabic is not among them, so the AI features are English-first on either phone. We covered what that means for UAE buyers separately.
Timing is part of the decision
The 18 Pro Max went up for pre-order on 12 September and is in stores from 18 September. The Duo does not open pre-orders until 4pm UAE time on Friday 16 October, going on sale Friday 23 October — five weeks later, shipping with iOS 27.1.
If your current phone is on its last legs, that gap decides it. If you can wait, the wait also buys you something useful: five weeks of reviews on a first-generation folding iPhone, from people who have actually creased one.
Which one to buy
Buy the 18 Pro Max if the camera is the reason you buy a flagship, if you want a phone this month rather than next, or if AED 3,000 is better spent on storage, an Apple Watch and a case. For most people this is the better phone, and it is not close.
Buy the Duo if you read, edit and multitask on your phone all day, if you have wanted a large screen in your pocket since the first Fold shipped, or if you accept a first-generation camera compromise in exchange for a genuinely new device. Add the case to your budget too — the Duo case is AED 319 and the folio AED 529.
Look at the competition if the fold is what you want but AED 8,499 is not. Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 starts at AED 7,199 with the same 7.6-inch inner screen, and it is on sale now.
The Pro Max is the better phone. The Duo is the more interesting one, and Apple has priced it accordingly.
Both were announced on the same night, which we covered minute by minute in our iPhone 18 event live blog. Our iPhone 18 UAE price and release date guide tracks the whole line-up, and the foldable iPhone guide follows the Duo through to launch.
Is the iPhone Duo better than the iPhone 18 Pro Max?
Not on cameras. The Duo drops the dedicated telephoto and the variable aperture, and uses Touch ID rather than Face ID. It wins on screen size, multitasking and outer-display battery life.
How much more is the iPhone Duo in the UAE?
AED 3,000 at the entry tier: AED 8,499 against AED 5,499. At 2TB it is AED 13,599 against AED 10,599.
When does the iPhone Duo go on sale in the UAE?
Pre-orders open on Friday 16 October at 4 PM UAE time, with sales starting on Friday 23 October.
Does the iPhone Duo have Face ID?
No. Apple uses Touch ID built into the side button.
