Should you upgrade from the iPhone 17 Pro Max?

The iPhone 18 Pro Max costs AED 5,499 in the UAE, AED 400 more than the now-revised price of the 17 Pro Max. If you bought last year’s phone (which was even cheaper at launch), here is what that AED 5,499 actually buys you, and why most 17 Pro Max owners should skip it.

The camera is the biggest generational change

The 48MP Fusion Main now has a variable aperture — six laser-cut blades that move between four settings, controlled manually in a new Pro panel alongside shutter speed, white balance and a live histogram. No iPhone has had this. It changes what you can do with depth of field optically rather than in software, and it is the first camera feature in years that a 17 Pro Max cannot approximate with an update.

The rest of the system moves to three 48MP Fusion cameras: Main, Ultra Wide and Telephoto. On the 17 Pro Max, the ultrawide and telephoto were already 48MP, so the practical gain is in processing and aperture control, not resolution.

Battery: the biggest jump Apple has ever shipped

The eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max is rated for up to 45 hours of video playback, which Apple calls the largest battery-life increase in iPhone history — helped by deleting the SIM tray and using the space for cells. The 18 Pro manages up to 36 hours.

If your 17 Pro Max gets you through the day comfortably, this is a nice-to-have. If you are a heavy user who tops up at 4 PM, it is the strongest non-camera reason to move.

A20 Pro, vapour chamber, and what you will not notice

The A20 Pro is built on a 2nm process and sits in a redesigned vapour chamber. In everyday use — messaging, photos, streaming — you will not feel it against an A19 Pro. In sustained load, long 4K exports, extended gaming sessions, you will.

Face ID stays, the Dynamic Island has shrunk and can now show three Live Activities at once, and connectivity moves to Apple’s own N1 wireless chip and C2 modem.

The eSIM catch

Just like the iPhone 17 series, the 18 Pro models are eSIM-only in the UAE. e& and du both support eSIM, and transfer is straightforward, but if you routinely swap in a physical SIM when travelling, that habit ends here. That is also why the battery numbers are as high as they are, so it is a trade-off rather than a pure loss.

What does not change

Worth being clear about what hasn’t moved in a year, because it is most of the phone. The display size and design are unchanged in the hand (though the two-tone look is now gone), Face ID stays, both phones keep Ceramic Shield 2 and IP68, and both run iOS 27 — which arrives free on 14 September for the 17 Pro Max as well. Anything you have read about iOS 27 features is coming to your current phone regardless.

Apple Intelligence is the same story on both: it launches in sixteen languages, and Arabic is not one of them. Upgrading does not change that.

Colours are black, silver, glacier and a new burgundy. That is the visible difference someone else will notice, and it is worth exactly as much as you think it is. The new phones also look more uniform with a single colour design instead of the dual-tone finish from last year.

Do the trade-in maths before you decide

Apple Trade In quotes range from AED 160 to AED 3,260, depending on the device. For a 17 Pro Max in good condition, the figure will sit towards the upper end of that range, which is the number that actually decides this upgrade.

Run it this way: take the AED 5,499 entry price, subtract your trade-in quote, and ask whether the remainder is worth a variable aperture and better battery life. For many 17 Pro Max owners, the net cost lands somewhere that makes the answer no. For a 15 Pro owner, the same sum produces a very different answer, because two generations of gains arrive at once.

The dubizzle route usually beats Apple’s quote in the UAE, but it costs you time, and the buyer will want the phone before you have the new one. Apple applies the trade-in at checkout, which is why running the estimate before 4 PM on 12 September matters — the full iPhone 18 Pro launch details cover the rest of the timings.

Or wait five weeks for the Duo?

A third option exists- the iPhone Duo arrives on 23 October at AED 8,499 — AED 3,000 more than the 18 Pro Max, with a 7.6-inch inner screen, no telephoto camera and Touch ID instead of Face ID.

If the appeal of upgrading is something genuinely new rather than incrementally better, the Duo delivers, and waiting five weeks costs you nothing if your 17 Pro Max still works. We have compared the Duo against the 18 Pro Max in detail, including the storage ladder at every tier.

Apple Trade In currently quotes between AED 160 and AED 3,260 depending on what you hand over, which is the single biggest lever on the final price. Check it before you pre-order on 12 September, not after.

Is the iPhone 18 Pro Max worth it over the 17 Pro Max?

For most people, no. The camera’s variable aperture and the jump to 45 hours of video playback are the two real gains; everything else is incremental against a phone that is one year old.

How much more is the iPhone 18 Pro Max than the 17 Pro Max was?

AED 400 at the 256GB tier — AED 5,499 against AED 5,099 at launch.

Does the iPhone 18 Pro still have Face ID?

Yes. Apple kept Face ID and used the redesigned Dynamic Island to fit three Live Activities at once.

Can I use a physical SIM in the iPhone 18 Pro in the UAE?

No. Both 18 Pro models are eSIM-only. e& and du support eSIM, and the removed tray is part of why the battery life is so much better.
