The process starts with a photo of the receipt or a live scan. Apple Intelligence identifies the items and quantities, after which the person paying can select what they ordered. The feature can also handle shared items, according to TechCrunch, allowing someone to choose part of an item rather than claiming the whole dish.
Apple’s description says the total includes each person’s share of tax and tip. The 9to5Mac test shows common tip options such as 18% and 20%, so the group can settle the meal without reopening the calculator app and quietly starting a second argument.
Apple Cash is still the final step
Once the items are selected, Apple Wallet can create a request for the other diners or let the user pay their own share. The request can be sent in Messages, while payment uses Apple Cash in the same way as other transactions. Everyone in the group will still need Apple Cash set up, which remains the least automatic part of the process.
Apple announced the feature in June as part of its iOS 27 software updates in its Apple newsroom release. TechCrunch’s account of the feature says diners can also select part of a shared item.
