Xbox is giving its PC app a rebuild, and Xbox Insiders can try it from today. In its Xbox Wire announcement, Microsoft says the updated app launches up to 60% faster and makes it easier to find games, reach friends and start playing. The refreshed cloud gaming web experience also reaches more players automatically over the next few weeks, and cloud apps on supported TVs and VR headsets begin picking up the same look.

The speed claim is the one Xbox is leading with, and its CEO has done the same. In a post on X, Asha Sharma called it “a meaningful improvement, with plenty more to do.” Pure Xbox reports that the new app first leaked in October, and that Xbox briefed it earlier this week.

What changes in the PC app

The Xbox Wire post puts three numbers on the performance work. They come from Microsoft’s own testing and, by its own footnote, vary by device, internet connection, system configuration and usage.

ActionClaimed improvement
App launchUp to 60% faster
Home, Store and Game Pass pagesUp to 50% faster
In-app windows openingUp to 65% faster

Speed is only half the pitch. The Library gets simpler navigation, updated filters and new ways to organise games, so a big collection should be easier to browse. Friends and social features move into the main navigation, which puts what friends are playing, chat and party invites a click away rather than buried. Search now spans more of Xbox from one box, returning games (including installed titles and add-ons) and people. Game cards, Home, Settings and animations also get a visual refresh.

For anyone who has waited on the app to load before a session, the faster launch and page loads are the changes you’ll notice first. Pure Xbox adds that the app is coming to Windows handhelds with better controller support, which matters for devices like the one in our look at Lenovo’s Legion Go 2 and its missing Xbox mode. Xbox Wire doesn’t mention handhelds, so treat that as reported rather than confirmed. The race to make PC game launchers feel quicker isn’t unique to Xbox either: the Epic Games Store rebuilt its launcher from the ground up and says it now boots five times faster.

Cloud gaming on the web, TV and VR

The refreshed web experience at play.xbox.com has been in Insider preview since earlier this year. Over the next few weeks Xbox will switch it on for more players automatically, and anyone who wants it sooner can visit the site directly. A new Library tab collects every game you can stream, whether you own it or reach it through Game Pass, and you can sort and filter by recently played, genre and input options. A desktop mode uses the extra space on PCs and larger displays, and the theme options now include dark and light modes plus five new high-contrast choices.

The same look and navigation are starting to arrive in Xbox cloud gaming apps on supported TVs and VR headsets. Xbox says each screen needs its own design, but the basics should feel the same everywhere: finding your games, knowing what you can play and getting in quickly.

Cloud gaming is the part to check before you get excited. The service runs in a limited list of countries, and the 29-country list on Wikipedia doesn’t name the UAE, Saudi Arabia or Egypt. Dubai Press reported in October 2026 that it isn’t available in the UAE. We couldn’t confirm regional cloud availability on Xbox’s own pages, so check Xbox’s regions page before relying on the web, TV or VR changes. The PC app update doesn’t depend on cloud availability, but Game Pass and Xbox store access vary by country, so some of its features may differ for you.

How to try the new app

Insiders get the PC app first. If you aren’t enrolled, Xbox says to download the Xbox Insider Hub on Windows PC and join the program. Feedback goes through aka.ms/XBOXplayervoice, and Insiders who need help can use the Xbox Insider subreddit. Xbox hasn’t given a date for the wider release. Pure Xbox says it was told the app should reach everyone soon if testing goes well.

The Xbox team has been busy on the player-facing side lately. We covered Platinum Achievements, which Sharma confirmed for this year. A faster app and a tidier cloud library fit the same push to make Xbox feel simpler wherever you play.

Can anyone download the new Xbox PC app today?

Not yet. The updated app is available to Xbox Insiders only, and Xbox hasn’t announced a general release date. You can join the program through the Xbox Insider Hub on Windows PC.

Do I need Game Pass for the new cloud library?

No. The new Library tab lists games you can stream, whether you own them or access them through Game Pass. Streaming itself depends on cloud gaming being offered in your country.

Is the 60% faster launch a guaranteed figure?

No. Xbox says the figures come from its own testing and “may vary” by device, connection and system configuration, and the 60% is an upper limit.
