The report comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman via 9to5Mac. Apple’s own iPhone Duo announcement confirms that Apple Pencil with USB-C will work with the phone later in 2026.
Apple had reportedly designed a smaller Pencil that would attach to the hinge side of the iPhone Duo. That plan did not make it to mass production, with the technical problems apparently arriving before Apple committed to the accessory. The report does not establish whether the issue was with the Pencil itself or with magnetic charging on the foldable phone.
iPhone Duo Apple Pencil support will need more testing
The regular USB-C Apple Pencil was not part of the iPhone Duo’s original hardware plan, according to the report. Apple now needs new software and extensive internal testing to make the existing accessory work with both displays.
Apple says the support is coming later this year, although Gurman expects that to mean late 2026. The company has not announced a more specific date, and the Pencil will not be part of the iPhone Duo experience from day one.
Apple’s foldable has a 5.4-inch outer display and a 7.6-inch inner display, so the accessory gives the larger screen a clear productivity angle. The trade-off is storage: the abandoned Pencil was expected to attach to the phone, while the USB-C model will need to travel separately unless case makers provide a holder.
