IO Interactive's James Bond game, 007 First Light, has now sold 3 million copies in less than two weeks, making it the fastest-selling game in the studio's history.
The milestone follows an earlier announcement that the game had sold 2.7 million copies during its first week. 007 First Light launched on May 26, with IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak confirming that sales are currently tracking "well above" the studio's internal forecasts.
“I’m feeling absolutely amazing,” Abrak said in an interview with IGN. “By all measures it’s freaking successful. It’s just going and it’s fantastic.”
007 First Light Has Sold Faster Than Any Hitman Game
The launch is particularly significant for IO Interactive because 007 First Light has now sold faster than any of the studio’s Hitman games.
The James Bond adventure has also reached the milestone without the Nintendo Switch 2 version, which is scheduled to arrive later this summer. That should give the game another opportunity to expand its audience over the coming months.
Abrak said the response was an emotional moment for the team after almost seven years of development. He also confirmed that he is now “very confident” the game will be profitable for IO Interactive.
IO Interactive Responds to the Reported $200 Million Budget
Reports from the Danish press claimed that 007 First Light cost 1.3 billion Danish krone, equivalent to approximately $200 million, over the course of its seven-year development cycle.
However, Abrak said the figure should not be interpreted as the development budget for the game alone. According to the IO Interactive CEO, it also includes marketing expenses, royalty models and bonuses that may be paid to the development team after certain targets are reached.
“It’s by far the most expensive one, but it’s not like for the game itself, not $200 million,” Abrak said.
IO Interactive Has Revealed Its 007 First Light Year-One Roadmap
IO Interactive is also planning to support 007 First Light with additional content throughout its first year.
The year-one roadmap shown on page five of the source article includes new challenges and upgrades, a path-tracing update, a Nintendo Switch 2 release, a G2 Glasses gadget and a New Game+ campaign. It also teases a new mission called “Bawma Will Return,” alongside future additions such as Photo Mode and a James Bond Day reward.
The roadmap notes that assignments may be reassigned or delayed, so the timing and final content lineup could still change.
A 007 First Light Sequel Could Be Cheaper to Develop
Although a sequel has not been formally announced, 007 First Light appears to have been designed as the beginning of a broader series. Abrak said IO Interactive has a strong relationship with Prime Video, where the licensing collaboration currently resides, and that further information will be shared in the future.
He also suggested that future Bond games could cost less to develop because the studio would be able to build on the technology, systems and assets created for 007 First Light.
Abrak pointed to the declining development costs of the Hitman: World of Assassination trilogy as an example. According to the CEO, the first game cost approximately $78 million, while the second cost $48 million and the third cost $19 million.
“Ambition is not necessarily that it’s more expensive,” Abrak said. “Some of this approach to concept and ambition, one could think could be applied to Bond as well.”
