Sandfall Interactive is already in pre-production on its next project, but the studio is not trying to make a bigger version of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. CEO and creative director Guillaume Broche says the team wants to make something different, keep its creative freedom and accept that some players may not like it, Polygon reports.

Polygon reports that Broche put the position plainly: “Maybe people won’t like it. That’s life.” He said Sandfall did not make Expedition 33 to please anyone, and that the same approach helped the game find its audience.

Sandfall Interactive next game will be different

Broche did not reveal the project’s genre, setting or release window. He did say the team wants to recover the excitement it had while making Expedition 33 and “let ourselves dream again and be creative again”. In the same interview, he added: “We’re going to go a bit crazy.”

That does not mean Sandfall plans to turn its next game into a giant production. In an interview with AUTOMATON, Broche said the studio has around 26 people and that the team is large enough for the next project’s pre-production.

He argued that restrictions helped shape Expedition 33. Hiring heavily and trying to solve every limitation from the first game could make the follow-up less focused, rather than better. Sandfall therefore plans to stay small and keep a strong creative direction.

Will it be Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 2?

Sandfall Interactive next game has not been confirmed as a direct sequel. Broche has previously described Clair Obscur as the franchise name, with Expedition 33 representing one story within it. A future game could return to that world or introduce a different setting and cast, but the studio has not announced which path it will take.

A direct sequel would also have to choose a canonical ending for Expedition 33, something Sandfall has avoided so far. Polygon reports that Broche declined to share further details about the project.

The available information points to a long wait. Expedition 33 took Broche six years to make, while Guillermin spent five and a half years on it. The next game is still in pre-production, so Sandfall’s second release is unlikely to appear soon.

Sandfall’s approach is familiar: make the game the team wants to play first, then let everyone else decide whether they agree.
