Blizzard’s new StarCraft shooter will tell a complete story with a beginning, middle and end, according to StarCraft general manager and creative director Dan Hay. The open-world game is targeting Spring 2030, but it is being designed as a standalone narrative experience rather than a seasonal game.

Blizzard’s earlier StarCraft announcement covered the reveal and release window, while the earlier StarCraft shooter rumours tracked the project before Blizzard confirmed it.

StarCraft shooter is planned as a complete story

In an interview with Korean media at BlizzCon 2026, Hay described the project as a “box product”. Players will create and name a character, follow that character’s story and explore an open world between major missions.

“It is a narrative-driven open-world shooter where players create a character, name them, and follow that character’s story. The story has a beginning, a middle, and an end.”

Hay said the game will have a definitive ending and is not currently being built around seasonal content. Players can return to the world after finishing the story, but Blizzard’s present plan is closer to a standalone campaign than an endlessly refreshed live-service game. PC Gamer’s report includes the full context from the interview.

Missions, exploration and a 70-year time jump

The game will divide its structure between serious missions with narrative consequences and open-world activities. If a mission is too difficult, players can leave it, scavenge for gear, improve their armour and try again later.

Hay said the game is set 70 years after StarCraft 2. That distance gives Blizzard room to introduce new characters and show how older factions have changed or fractured. The team still wants to retain StarCraft’s dark, gritty tone and space-western atmosphere, according to the interview published by Inven Global.

Blizzard’s announcement describes the project as an original open-world shooter set in the Koprulu Sector, with a Spring 2030 target. The company has not announced platforms, pricing or a specific release date. Its official announcement lists the game alongside the other projects revealed during BlizzCon 2026.

The StarCraft shooter is still years from release, so the structure may change during development. For now, Blizzard is presenting a game with a defined campaign, optional exploration and no seasonal roadmap.
