Blizzard has confirmed a Diablo Netflix series is in development, with the animated project announced during the opening keynote at BlizzCon 2026. The studio is also discussing similar projects for Overwatch, Warcraft and other properties, but none of those projects has been confirmed.
Diablo Netflix series is confirmed, but details are scarce
Blizzard president Johanna Faries announced the project without sharing a release date, cast, animation studio or episode count. “Diablo, I promise, is just the beginning,” she said, adding that more details would be shared when possible. The announcement was reported by VGC.
The announcement places the Diablo Netflix series inside Microsoft’s wider push to take its game franchises into film and television. Microsoft has already been linked with film and TV plans for Halo, Warcraft, Elder Scrolls and Diablo. A Sea of Thieves live-action film is also in development, while Fallout and A Minecraft Movie have given Xbox a useful argument for keeping Hollywood on speed dial.
Could Overwatch get an animated series?
Blizzard said it is in “great discussions” about transmedia projects for Overwatch, Warcraft and other franchises. That is not the same as a green light. IGN reported in May that Overwatch general manager Walter Kong would not rule out an animated series, after years of fan demand for more stories outside the game.
Blizzard and Netflix previously planned adaptations involving StarCraft, Overwatch and Diablo, according to reporting cited by IGN. Those plans fell apart after Blizzard sued Netflix over the recruitment of its former chief financial officer. The new Diablo announcement suggests the two companies are willing to work together again, although Blizzard has not said whether this series is connected to the earlier project.
The timing also fits Xbox’s larger entertainment strategy. In an official Xbox podcast, Faries discussed Blizzard’s 35th anniversary year and the return of BlizzCon. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma has separately argued that games have become a major part of the wider entertainment business, with Microsoft’s franchises now being developed across games, film and television.
There is no release date for the Diablo Netflix series yet, and Blizzard has not confirmed Netflix availability in the UAE. The games remain available through their usual platforms while the adaptation waits for its first proper trailer.
