Spoilers for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 follow.

The new Netflix anime ends far more gently than most fans expected, and its showrunner says that’s less of a U-turn than it looks. In an interview with IGN, Bartosz Sztybor, who acts as showrunner, writer and producer on the series, argued that Season 1’s notoriously bleak finale was never really a bad ending to begin with.

IGN describes Season 1 as a story where nearly everyone dies and only one character gets a bittersweet ‘good’ ending, so viewers walked into Season 2 braced for more heartbreak. Instead, IGN says most of the main cast in Season 2 get a ‘happy’ ending of sorts. Asked why the team reversed course, Sztybor pointed to the genre’s roots. “Cyberpunk originated from noir, and in noir, there is always a character versus the city,” he said, adding that the central idea is that you never beat the city or the system.

That framing is what lets him call both seasons happy. Sztybor said the sugary “lived happily ever after” endings of mainstream films have trained audiences to read every Cyberpunk finale as a failure. In his view, surviving as yourself, making one defining choice or sacrificing for someone you love counts as a win, even if the corporation is still standing at the end. He summed it up by saying noir and Cyberpunk are both trying to show what real life is like.

Season 2 also stands apart from the first in structure. Netflix’s Tudum announcement describes Edgerunners 2 as a standalone 10-episode story in the same setting, following a fresh group of mercenaries with an all-new voice cast and a reimagined animation style. Because it doesn’t continue David and Lucy’s arc, the team had room to take the tone somewhere else without undoing the original.

All 10 episodes arrived on Netflix on 20 October. IGN scored the season 9 out of 10 in its review, saying it “delivers the gory, action-packed goods” but doesn’t quite reach the highs of the original. IGN also published an earlier interview with Sztybor about why Roman’s personal life gets so little screen time this season.

Do I need to watch Season 1 before Edgerunners 2?

Netflix describes Edgerunners 2 as a standalone story with a new crew and cast, set in the same Night City. Watching Season 1 first still adds context, especially for the tonal contrast Sztybor discusses.

Where can I watch Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2?

The series is exclusive to Netflix, and all 10 episodes were released together on 20 October 2026, so there’s no weekly wait.
