Hideo Kojima is heading back to Night City. The Metal Gear Solid and Death Stranding creator will reprise his Cyberpunk 2077 cameo as braindance director Hideyoshi Oshima in Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which arrives on Netflix tomorrow, October 20.
The official Cyberpunk: Edgerunners account made the announcement, saying viewers may remember him from Konpeki Plaza during “The Heist”, and that the renowned braindance director is making another appearance in Night City. CD Projekt Red co-CEO Michal Nowakowski followed up with a post saying it’s always a pleasure to work with Kojima. IGN reports that Kojima responded quickly and shared photos from his recording session. In a post on X, he confirmed he makes a cameo as Oshima, “the character who appeared in the previous game.”
If you missed Oshima in 2020, you’re forgiven. IGN notes he isn’t tied to V’s main quest and is easy to skip, but players who explore Arasaka’s Konpeki Plaza can find Kojima sitting near a bar. He talks about braindances, the in-universe tech for replaying recorded memories, and says he wants his productions to convey real, raw human emotion. It’s a fitting pitch for a character in a city where braindances are mostly sold on far less lofty emotions.
The cameo also pays off a tease. According to GamesRadar, Kojima said on the radio show KOJI10 that he’d been asked to appear in a big live-action movie and a major anime title. IGN says Edgerunners 2 was one of the anime projects he hinted at, while the “big movie” is still unidentified. Neither CD Projekt Red nor Netflix has said how large the part is, so “cameo” remains the operative word.
Kojima’s schedule is full regardless. IGN says he’s working on Physint and OD, and Bill Skarsgård has been named lead in Physint. Night City’s screen presence is also growing beyond anime, with Paramount’s live-action film in development, as Kyle Gallner’s pitch for V shows.
