Rockstar is building GTA 6’s Jason and Lucia around the same kind of emotional connection that made Red Dead Redemption 2’s Arthur Morgan stick with players.

Speaking to GamesRadar during TroisCouleurs’ visit to Rockstar North, Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson said the team wanted to carry lessons from Red Dead Redemption 2 into its next game. That includes a world with more meaningful interaction and characters players care about beyond the missions.

“We wanted to take the depth that we were able to add into the world of Red Dead Redemption 2 and the ability to interact with the world in a much more significant way, but then also this sort of emotional connection that people end up having with Arthur.”

GTA 6 Jason and Lucia are built around a relationship

Rockstar considered continuing with several playable characters after GTA 5, but Nelson said the studio worried that adding more leads would dilute the time players spent with each one. The team instead chose two characters in a relationship: Jason and Lucia.

That decision gives the story room to focus on how the pair behave together, rather than treating their relationship as background decoration. A previous Rockstar interview covered by tbreak described the couple as partners who work jobs together across Leonida.

The preview cited by GamesRadar includes quieter scenes such as Jason and Lucia getting ready to go out. Nelson said those moments are deliberate because they make the violent sequences carry more weight. In one example, Lucia is thrown down a staircase before control switches to Jason, leaving the player with his concern rather than a detached view of the action.

Nelson also pointed to Red Dead Redemption 2’s quieter scenes as a model. The aim is not to turn GTA 6 into a western with smartphones, but to make the relationship feel present between the jobs, car chases and shootings.

What Rockstar has confirmed about GTA 6

The game returns to Vice City and follows Jason and Lucia across the fictional state of Leonida. Rockstar has also described systems that track food, exercise and sleep, with those routines affecting how the two characters look and recover. Tbreak’s GTA 6 gameplay report has more on those mechanics.

GTA 6 launches on 19 November 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC release date.
