Rockstar considered four protagonists for GTA 6 before settling on the criminal couple Jason and Lucia, the studio has said.

The GTA 6 four protagonists idea — going one further than Grand Theft Auto 5’s trio — was floated during early design work. IGN visited Rockstar North and put the question to co-studio head Rob Nelson.
Why GTA 6 four protagonists became two
Nelson told IGN the team discussed how to follow GTA 5’s three playable leads, including doubling the count, but worried about spreading players too thin. GamingBolt noted the same reasoning in its own report.
“After doing GTA 5, we talked about different ideas of – do we do more characters? How do we follow up three characters? Is it four characters now? But we worried about diluting the amount of player time with each and therefore player connection with those characters. So we decided to step in this direction of two characters in a relationship.”

What we know about GTA 6’s leads
Jason and Lucia are a couple who work jobs together across the state of Leonida. The relationship sits at the centre of the story, which Rockstar judged easier to build when players spend the whole game with two characters rather than four.
The pair have fronted GTA 6’s marketing, from the reveal trailer to the Netflix extended look in August. GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19, with pricing and editions set earlier this year.
Will GTA 6 have four protagonists?
No. Rockstar considered four playable characters early in development but settled on two: Jason and Lucia.
Who are the two GTA 6 protagonists?
Jason and Lucia, a couple who work jobs together across the state of Leonida. Their relationship sits at the centre of the story.
Why did Rockstar pick two protagonists instead of four?
Rockstar said more characters would dilute the time players spend with each and weaken the connection to them. Two characters in a relationship let the studio focus that attention.
