Liu recalled fans waiting more than 30 hours for Marvel’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con and described himself as deeply grateful to the audience that embraced the first film. He would prefer the broken-glass offer to remain metaphorical, naturally, but joked that he was open to the literal version if required. Marvel negotiations rarely sound this hazardous.
Is Shang-Chi 2 officially happening?
Shang-Chi 2 is something Marvel is working on, according to director Destin Daniel Cretton, but the studio has not announced a title, production start, or release date. Cretton said the project is evolving and that the team wants to honour the reception of the first film.
Those comments offer some reassurance without turning the sequel into a scheduled release. Our earlier report on Destin Daniel Cretton’s Shang-Chi 2 update covered his continued involvement, but Liu’s latest answer shows how little public certainty surrounds the project.
Liu has previously said the sequel was intended to arrive after Marvel’s forthcoming Avengers projects, with delays affecting those plans. He has also repeatedly expressed confidence that it will eventually happen. His new remarks reinforce his personal commitment rather than announcing a change in Marvel’s schedule.
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings introduced Liu as Shaun, also known as Shang-Chi, in 2021. The film connected its hero to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe, but Shang-Chi, Katy, and Ying Nan have not subsequently returned in another live-action project. Liu has voiced the character in animated productions including What If…? and Marvel Zombies.
When will Shang-Chi appear next?
Shang-Chi’s next confirmed live-action appearance is Avengers: Doomsday, which is due on 18 December 2026. A trailer has shown the character among the film’s large ensemble and suggested he will participate in several action scenes, although the size of his role remains unclear.
The film also features Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, giving Liu a major MCU return while the standalone sequel stays in development. Avengers: Doomsday can move Shang-Chi’s wider story forward, but an ensemble appearance cannot provide the same focus as a second solo film.
Liu is ready whenever Marvel calls. For fans, the less theatrical requirement is still the important one: a firm announcement, preferably without anyone having to crawl across anything sharper than a Comic-Con carpet.
