Blumhouse is turning to YouTube for its next run of video game films. At the Blumfest panel at New York Comic Con on Friday, Jason Blum announced a multi-project deal with Matthew “MatPat” Patrick, the former host of the Theory channels, and the first film will adapt the indie horror game Amanda the Adventurer, Variety reports.
Patrick, who moderated the panel, said he is taking “some of my all-time favorite indie games and horror channels from the interwebs” and partnering with Blumhouse to bring them to the big screen, as IGN quotes him. He added that the pair are “moving fast” on the project and are already in talks with potential writers and directors.
What we know about the film
Amanda the Adventurer is a 2023 first-person puzzle game from publisher DreadXP. Players take the role of Riley Park, who finds a mysterious videotape in a late aunt’s attic and unravels a sinister mystery around a fictional children’s TV show of the same name.
Epic Pictures, DreadXP’s parent company, is also involved. Deadline says Epic Pictures CEO Patrick Ewald will produce alongside Blum and Patrick. Patrick is developing the feature adaptation.
No writer, director, cast, or release window has been announced. Variety says more details will follow soon.
More indie horror adaptations are coming
Patrick described the deal as covering “a few projects in the works”, so Amanda the Adventurer is only the first. He didn’t name the others. IGN speculates that popular horror YouTube channels could supply material, but that’s guesswork, not an announcement.
The deal extends Blumhouse’s push into game adaptations. Deadline links the news to the Five Nights at Freddy’s franchise, which has passed $520M globally. Elsewhere in the studio’s slate, we’ve covered the Dead by Daylight movie director and the studio’s other horror sequels, such as Don’t Breathe 3.
Who is MatPat?
Matthew Patrick is a YouTube creator best known for the Game Theory channel and the wider Theory network, which he has now stepped back from as host.
When will the Amanda the Adventurer movie be released?
There’s no release date yet. The film is in early development, with writers and directors still being discussed.
Will the film be in UAE cinemas?
Nothing has been announced on distribution, so UAE availability is unknown.
