Director Kitao Sakurai says a Street Fighter sequel is already in development, but whether it gets made depends on how the first film performs. The movie opens in theatres on 16 October 2026.

Speaking to MovieWeb, Sakurai described the sequel work as active. “It’s something that we’re thinking about and developing,” he said. “We definitely have a lot of ideas, and we’re writing currently, but you know, I wouldn’t want to make any promises one way or the other about what exactly we’re gonna do.”

He also tied the project to audience response. “It kind of depends on how people react to this one, and whether they, you know, support this vision of the story,” Sakurai said. IGN reports the groundwork would continue Ryu and Ken’s story after the second World Warrior Tournament.

Sakurai was more guarded when ComicBook.com asked about rumours that the follow-up would be called Street Fighter: Round Two. “I can unfortunately not confirm nor deny anything of that nature,” he said, adding that the team would “obviously love to do” more. The title remains unconfirmed.

Who could appear in a sequel

IGN notes that Sagat hasn’t appeared in any trailer or marketing, and no casting for him has been announced. Fans are already treating that gap as a hint, though the game roster is large enough that any number of characters could turn up. Akuma, by contrast, features in the promotion, and IGN says the film includes animated sequences covering Ryu and Ken’s backstory with their mentor Gouken and his brother Akuma. Our earlier look at the latest trailer covers the Ryu and Ken tension and E. Honda’s attack.

The studio context

Street Fighter follows Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, another Capcom adaptation. IGN says that film was broadly well received, but that a sequel looks unlikely for now because Cregger has said he will “never” make another franchise film. Sakurai’s comments suggest Street Fighter is taking the opposite approach: planning ahead, while leaving the decision to the box office.
