VisionQuest showrunner Terry Matalas says Marvel gave his team almost free rein on the series, with little need to bend the story around the wider MCU. He made the comments to IGN at New York Comic Con 2026, where Marvel Television screened the show’s first episode ahead of its Disney+ premiere on 14 October.

Matalas appeared on the Marvel Television and Animation panel alongside cast members Paul Bettany, James Spader, Emily Hampshire and Ruaridh Mollica. Afterwards, IGN’s Jeffrey Vega asked him how much the writers had to work around the bigger MCU picture. “Not too much” was the gist.

Early ideas, and a quick read of Kevin Feige

According to Matalas, a few early ideas went to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige for a sanity check. “You could quickly read his temperature,” he said, adding that the team “pretty much did exactly what we [wanted]”. He credited a writing staff that conceived the story in the room, and said “it’s all on the screen”.

That fits what he told Polygon in an earlier interview, where he described a direct line to Feige and Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum, but few creative borders.

Where Vision goes after WandaVision

Matalas said Marvel gave him a blank slate for what happens to Vision after White Vision flies off at the end of WandaVision. He leaned into the passage of time, asking where Vision has been and what he has been doing. The answer centres on an identity quest: is he the old Vision, something new, or something else?

Feige’s one fixed requirement, Matalas said, was that Vision reunites with his son. “The rest is up to you,” he recalls Feige telling him. Matalas then worked backwards. If Vision is looking for his son Tommy, who is he talking to? Ultron, he decided. That created a problem, because Ultron was dead, and getting round it became the starting point for the plot.

What to expect

IGN reports that early reactions from the NYCC screening are positive, with some calling the series a “worthy successor to WandaVision“. Whether Wanda shows up is still unconfirmed: Bettany has said her return is a secret. Ultron’s role has also been teased in the first trailer.
