Huawei moves Ascend 960DT AI chip launch to Q1 2027

Huawei is moving the Huawei Ascend 960DT AI chip launch forward to the first quarter of 2027, three quarters earlier than the schedule previously outlined by the company. Huawei announced the change at Huawei Connect in Shanghai, as it continues building an alternative to Nvidia’s hardware for Chinese AI companies.

Huawei Ascend 960DT is coming in Q1 2027

Huawei had previously planned to launch the Ascend 960DT in the third quarter of 2027, according to TechCrunch. A company spokesperson said the chip is now expected to be ready in Q1 2027. Reuters separately reported that Huawei also plans to release the Ascend 960PR in the third quarter of 2027, one quarter earlier than its previous timetable.

The announcement comes as Huawei tries to expand its role in AI computing while facing production limits. Rotating chairman Eric Xu said the company cannot currently produce enough AI computing equipment to meet demand in China, limiting its ability to expand overseas in a fully fledged way, Reuters reported.

Larger systems, but a smaller first step

Huawei said an Ascend 960 supernode will connect up to 4,096 AI processors. The company also outlined a longer-term architecture intended to link far larger clusters, while saying it had shipped more than 1,000 systems to over 370 customers. Those figures describe Huawei’s broader computing push rather than confirmed availability for the new chip.

The scale follows Huawei’s earlier work on large AI installations, including a proposed data-centre design built around 100,000 Ascend cards in Huawei’s 3D data-centre concept. The company’s supply position remains a practical constraint: its reported push to build its own DRAM is part of the wider effort to reduce exposure to restricted components. The Huawei Ascend 960DT schedule will matter less if production cannot keep pace.

Nvidia remains the benchmark Huawei is trying to challenge, although the two companies do not currently compete on equal access to the Chinese market. Nvidia’s most advanced processors are restricted from direct sale in China, while Huawei’s own systems are still constrained by manufacturing capacity and overseas availability.

For UAE data-centre operators, there is no confirmed local price or launch date for the Ascend 960DT. Huawei’s announcement establishes a timetable, not regional availability. The first quarter of 2027 will show whether the company can turn the earlier schedule into hardware at useful volumes.
