Netflix is testing AI Discover, a tab in its TV app that recommends titles by mood, with themes like “Scare Me” and “Quick Watches”. According to TheWrap, a small group of members gets it first, before it rolls out to more subscribers.

Instead of scrolling rows of thumbnails, you start with how you feel, who’s on the sofa, or how much time you have. “Family Movie Night” covers the second; “Quick Watches” covers the third. Each theme comes with a clip from a show or film, so you get a preview before you commit to a list.

Pick a theme and Netflix serves a list of recommendations. More specific themes appear as you explore, and a “Something Different” option gives you a fresh set if nothing lands. Every title also gets a “Tune Your Recommendations” button next to “Play” and “My List”. Use it to keep a title in the lineup or tell Netflix never to suggest it again.

The tab adjusts to what you tell it and keeps learning from there. TheWrap calls it “essentially a more interactive form of the streamer’s current algorithm”. That’s a fair picture: the same engine, but one you can talk back to. Netflix frames it as an experiment.

Think of AI Discover as our test kitchen: we’re trying out new recipes for discovery, and your use and feedback help us decide which ones to keep, improve or serve up next. Some may even make their way into the main Netflix experience.

Netflix, press release

Variety describes AI Discover as Netflix’s first AI-branded content recommendations feature on TVs. Netflix has long leaned on its algorithm to choose what you see, but it hasn’t put the AI label on the front of a feature until now. It hasn’t said which AI models power the tab, which TVs count as supported, or whether members have to opt in.

The first wave goes to US members who watch Netflix in English on supported TVs. Netflix says more people will get it gradually “in the coming weeks”, and the best ideas from the test kitchen could end up on everyone’s home screen.
