The Garmin Fenix 9 and Fenix 9 Pro are official. The Verge reports the flagship multisport smartwatches land with an AMOLED display rated up to 3,000 nits — twice as bright as the Fenix 8 — and a titanium-cased Pro model with optional LTE and satellite messaging. Orders open August 28.

The launch follows Tuesday’s Play Harder livestream, which we previewed before the event.

What’s new on the Garmin Fenix 9

Garmin says the rugged formula is unchanged: sapphire lens, leakproof buttons, a 40-metre dive rating. Under the case sits 50 per cent more RAM than the Fenix 8 and a reworked map engine that pans up to 30 per cent faster, and storage doubles to 64GB.

The new software story is Garmin Epic, which groups activities recorded over days, weeks or months into one shareable story in Garmin Connect, photos and health data included. Stamina zones and a stamina curve aim to make pacing less guesswork, and rucking now tracks pack weights up to 100kg.

Garmin Fenix 9 Pro: titanium, LTE and solar

The Fenix 9 Pro trades the polymer case for titanium — a first for the line — and adds optional LTE or inReach satellite connectivity on every size for $100 more, with satellite features on a $7.99-a-month plan. The 51mm Pro gets a 1.5-inch OLED, the largest display ever on a Fenix.

Battery life reaches 29 days on the largest Fenix 9 and 31 days on the largest Pro, with the solar versions stretching to 57 days under Garmin’s usual caveat of three hours a day in direct sun.
