The Steam Frame is not a simple wireless display for a gaming PC. It can stream games from a computer, but also runs a standalone SteamOS library on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip. Valve chose 16GB of LPDDR5X memory for both models, rather than offering a cheaper configuration with less RAM.
Steam Frame price changed as memory costs rose
Joy Lyons, a Valve hardware engineer, told PC Gamer that the team began with a specific price in mind, but that “the price target shifted due to the ongoing RAM crisis around the world”. Jeremy Selan, a software engineer on the project, was more direct: “I wish we could have shipped it at the price that we were at last year.”
Valve’s explanation is broader than one expensive memory chip. In a separate interview with Tom’s Hardware, Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said memory and storage were more expensive, while motherboards, copper and worldwide shipping had also risen in cost. The Verge reported that Valve had considered using less RAM, but decided a single 16GB target would give the headset a more consistent baseline for its software.
What the Steam Frame price means against Quest 3
The comparison with Meta’s Quest 3 makes the price harder to ignore. PC Gamer notes that the Quest 3 has 8GB of LPDDR5 memory and remains available for $600 after its own price increase. The Steam Frame has twice the memory and a different mix of standalone and PC-streaming features, but the entry gap is still $459.
