What did the Lanterns SDCC panel reveal?
The Lanterns panel revealed that Sinestro is in the series, while its new footage positions the Manhunters as the more immediate threat. According to our sister site IGN Middle East’s report from the Lanterns SDCC panel, Sinestro appears imprisoned in space but remains aware of Hal Jordan’s movements and his search for an apprentice — or replacement, as Sinestro apparently prefers to call it.
The panel also screened a scene in which Hal interrogates an alien Manhunter posing as a former football player. A sports quiz gives way to questions about Harry Potter and Barack Obama, exposing gaps in the disguise before the Manhunter claims to have a “nuke-level explosive” embedded in its skeleton.
That mixture of detective work, alien infiltration, and Hal being irritatingly clever looks like the show’s sweet spot. The premise may begin with Hal and John Stewart investigating a murder in rural Nebraska, but the panel footage makes clear that the case has much larger consequences.
Which SDCC announcements were genuinely new?
Laura Linney’s role as a Guardian was the panel’s clearest new casting detail, while Nathan Fillion’s appearance provided fresh Guy Gardner footage rather than a casting surprise. Variety had previously reported Linney’s casting, but co-creator Chris Mundy used the panel to confirm that she plays one of the ancient beings overseeing the Green Lantern Corps.
Mundy said Linney’s Guardian has “a lot to say to John about the role of being the Green Lantern”, keeping further details under wraps. Aaron Pierre, who plays John Stewart, described Linney as “like an auntie” and praised her presence on set.
Fillion, meanwhile, appeared midway through the panel wearing a “Best Gardner Ever” T-shirt and introduced a clip featuring Guy Gardner. His involvement in Lanterns was already established, including in tbreak’s coverage of the Lanterns trailer and Guy Gardner footage. SDCC instead offered another taste of the character’s irreverent energy, because apparently one Green Lantern Corps badge does not require emotional restraint.
The final clip supplied the panel’s biggest question mark. Hal and John fight over who will wear the ring before a bright red light fills Hal’s room and a siren sounds. Red Lanterns are an obvious possibility, but neither the clip nor the panel confirmed them; the signal could still be connected to the Manhunters.
