The new Avengers: Doomsday trailer has convinced fans the film is hiding two Doctor Dooms — and that the second one might be Cillian Murphy.
The special look Marvel showed at D23 2026 offers the closest view yet of Robert Downey Jr.’s Victor von Doom: close-ups of his eyes through the mask. The eyes are bluish-green, with a small mole beside one of them. Downey Jr.’s are brown, and he has no such mole. IGN has the receipts.

If the Doom in the trailer is not the one Downey Jr. is playing, the question becomes who is. The popular answer is Murphy. He was a fancast favourite while Marvel was assembling the cast, he has noticeably lighter eyes, and a clip of him speaking Romanian and Romani made the rounds over the weekend. None of it is confirmation — Marvel’s official cast list does not include him — but it is where the internet has landed.
The counter-case has momentum of its own. Contacts and make-up can fix an eye colour and a mole in an afternoon, and the fancam is not a casting announcement. “They are not paying RDJ millions to play a fake Doom,” one fan argued in IGN’s roundup. “They paid Ben Kingsley millions to play a fake Mandarin,” another replied.
A second Doom costume in the trailer has added fuel. He changes outfit mid-fall from a tower, landing in a smoother, less armoured suit with a calmer mask. Two Dooms, or a wardrobe change: the argument in miniature.
Fans have been here before. The first proper Doomsday trailer was scanned for cropped-out characters within a day, and the D23 special look already gave Doom an army of Sentinels. Variants have shared screens in this universe for years. If Spider-Man can meet his own doubles, Doctor Doom can too.
Avengers: Doomsday is in cinemas December 18, 2026, and Avengers: Secret Wars follows a year later. The theories are the entertainment until then.
