Jeremy Renner has teased a Hawkeye return with an Instagram Reel of his costume, set to the Hawkeye theme and posted without a caption. The post lands as a final round of reshoots reportedly gets underway on Avengers: Doomsday, which opens on December 18.

IGN was first to report the tease. Marvel has not confirmed Renner’s involvement in the film. His only confirmed Hawkeye appearance is the Avengers Infinity Defense ride at Disneyland’s Avengers Campus, opening in 2028, and epicstream notes the costume post may simply be a nod to that attraction.
What’s behind the Hawkeye return tease
Renner’s post follows confirmation this week that Doomsday is back in production. Winston Duke, who plays M’Baku, told CNA that “additional photography for Avengers: Doomsday” is now underway. Marvel tipster Daniel Richtman has suggested the extra filming will be used to “add a lot of cameos”, which would give an original Avenger a natural slot. Inside the Magic also reports Mark Ruffalo shot new scenes for the film last weekend.
With the film four months from release, any additional material is expected to be shorter scenes and cameos rather than changes to the plot, with the work reportedly tacked onto the start of filming for 2027’s Avengers: Secret Wars.
The return that almost didn’t happen
Renner last played Hawkeye in the 2021 Disney+ series, which handed the bow to Hailee Steinfeld’s Kate Bishop. He spent much of the time since recovering from the snowplough accident that left him in critical condition in January 2023. He also publicly fell out with Disney over pay for a second season of the show.
“They asked me to do Season 2, and they offered me half the money… Did you think I’m only half the Jeremy because I got ran over?… I told them to go fly a kite. I mean, just at the insult offer.”
He told ComicBook.com in December that Clint Barton never stays retired for long: “Until he’s killed, he’s always gonna be working.”
The Hawkeye return would be his first on-screen appearance since the series. Fan interest in Doomsday is already strong — ticket pre-sales are running ahead of Spider-Man: Brand New Day — and Marvel has published a 15-movie watchlist for anyone catching up. Renner’s ride appearance ties into the wider Avengers Campus expansion due in 2028.
Is Jeremy Renner returning as Hawkeye in Avengers: Doomsday?
Marvel has not confirmed it. Renner posted a caption-less Reel of his Hawkeye costume as Doomsday reshoots reportedly get underway, prompting speculation. His only confirmed Hawkeye appearance is in Disneyland’s Avengers Infinity Defense ride, opening in 2028.
When does Avengers: Doomsday release in theatres?
December 18, 2026. The film is four months from release, with additional photography reportedly underway at Pinewood Studios.
Why has Hawkeye been absent from the MCU?
Renner last appeared as Hawkeye in the 2021 Disney+ series. He spent time recovering from a January 2023 snowplough accident, and publicly turned down a second season of Hawkeye over a pay dispute with Disney.
