Samuel L. Jackson will return as Nick Fury in Avengers: Secret Wars, but not in Avengers: Doomsday. The actor said so himself, and added that Marvel hasn’t told him anything else about the film.

Jackson made the comments in a red carpet interview with The Direct at the premiere of his new film, The Beast. Asked what he could tease about his next Marvel appearance, he answered: “Next movie… [The] movie after this one.” Pressed on the plot, he said: “I have no idea. [Marvel] hasn’t told me anything, other than, ‘You’re not gonna be in this movie. You’ll be in the next.’”

Jackson didn’t name either film. As Entertainment Weekly notes, “this movie” almost certainly means Avengers: Doomsday, which opens on 18 December 2026. The next film on Marvel’s slate is Avengers: Secret Wars, dated 17 December 2027. Marvel Studios hasn’t commented.

Fury was last seen in the MCU in 2023’s The Marvels. The Doomsday cast already confirmed includes Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Anthony Mackie, Letitia Wright and Paul Rudd, and Jackson’s absence settles a question fans have debated for months.

What we know about Secret Wars

Little is confirmed. The Russo brothers are directing, and Secret Wars is expected to close the Multiverse Saga. Reports say filming has slipped, with shooting reportedly moving to January 2027, though no reason has been given. Anthony Mackie has said his Secret Wars work follows his Broadway run in Macbeth, which ends in July 2027.

For Doomsday, the Russos have estimated a runtime of about 150 minutes.
