Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, according to Deadline. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura, whose credits include the Transformers films, is attached, and CD Projekt Red, the game’s developer and rights holder, is also producing. Variety has independently confirmed the project.

It’s early days. No writer, director or cast has been announced, and there’s no release window. IGN notes it’s also unclear whether the film will adapt the 2020 game directly or tell a new story in the same universe, as Netflix’s animated *Edgerunners* series did.

What the game gives Paramount

The game follows V, a mercenary implanted with a biochip that holds the engram of rockstar and terrorist Johnny Silverhand, played by Keanu Reeves. As Silverhand’s consciousness starts to overwrite V’s own, the pair have to find a way to separate while taking on the Arasaka corporation, which effectively rules Night City.

Deadline reports that *Cyberpunk 2077* has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, and its Phantom Liberty expansion 15 million. Variety points out that the game launched in December 2020 after several delays and a rough start on performance, before it recovered into a commercial success for CD Projekt Red.

Phantom Liberty also added Idris Elba to the cast. IGN suggests that storyline could suit an adaptation, though it may be a harder entry point for general audiences.

Not the first attempt

CD Projekt Red announced a live-action collaboration with Anonymous Content in October 2023, at an early stage and searching for a screenwriter. The reports on the Paramount film don’t say how, or whether, that project relates to this one.

Paramount’s games slate

The film joins a growing list of game adaptations at the studio. *Street Fighter*, co-produced with Legendary, opens on 16 October. A *Call of Duty* film, directed by Peter Berg and co-written with Taylor Sheridan, is set for 2028. Variety frames the *Cyberpunk* project as a play for an older audience than the *Super Mario Bros. Movie* or *Minecraft Movie* crowd.

The timing fits the wider push. Paramount recently merged with Warner Bros., while Xbox has launched a division to take its franchises into film and TV, and ARC Raiders and The Finals are also heading to the screen.

CD Projekt Red is meanwhile working on the next *Cyberpunk* game, which IGN expects to arrive after *The Witcher 4*, possibly around 2029 or 2030. A film on a similar timeline could line up with it, though nothing has been confirmed.
