Inde Navarrette has given fans their first listen to her Rogue accent, and it’s exactly one word long. In an interview with etalkCTV at TIFF, the Obsession star was asked for a sample of her Southern drawl and offered a single “sugah”. IGN reports that she’s open to reworking it if the response is poor.
ComicBook.com says the exchange happened on the red carpet before a TIFF panel on Obsession with writer-director Curry Barker. Navarrette admitted she hasn’t done “a lot of practice” on the accent yet, though she did manage to slot in the word fans most associate with Rogue. You can watch the clip below.
The pressure is easy to understand. Rogue’s accent is arguably what fans remember best about her, and Navarrette is playing a Mississippi-born mutant in a reboot that many will judge on first impressions. Her answer to that was practical: “I’m going to work on it if you don’t like it,” she said, adding that she’ll talk to the Marvel team about what they want to do.
It isn’t the first time she’s addressed the accent. In September she said she was putting in the work to nail the Southern delivery, and we covered her promise to give the role everything she’s got. IGN reports that part of her plan is a trip to Mississippi at some point, and that she was “doing everything humanly possible” to do Rogue justice.
Her casting followed weeks of speculation. We previously reported that she had her eye on Mystique after meeting director Jake Schreier, but Marvel confirmed her as Rogue at D23 in August. Bro Bible reports that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced the casting on 14 August. According to IGN, she was joined by Christopher Abbott as Professor X and Maya Boyd as Storm, with Asa Germann later cast as Angel.
Fans have a long wait to hear more than one word. X-Men is scheduled for theatres on 5 May 2028, and it’s part of the wider slate Kevin Feige outlined in Marvel’s roadmap through 2042. As IGN notes, Rogue’s animated voice actor, Lenore Zann, has already reacted to Navarrette’s casting.
