Disney+ and Hulu have ordered a reboot of Glee, bringing Ryan Murphy’s musical back to screens 17 years after it premiered on Fox. The series order is for a show from 20th Television. No logline, production details or returning cast were revealed with the announcement.
The pickup follows a summer of steady hints. According to IGN, Murphy floated a revival in July during an interview with People, then said in September that a script was finished. He had completed it just weeks before the order, alongside co-creators Ian Brennan and Brad Falchuk. Murphy told Entertainment Tonight in late September that he’d been in touch with around 10 original cast members, and that they were all enthusiastic.
Casting news started trickling out within hours. TheWrap reports, citing sources, that Lea Michele is in talks to reprise Rachel Berry, a story Variety broke first. Heather Morris posted on Instagram that Brittany “is alive and well … and back for more.” No premiere date has been announced.
Fans, meanwhile, have mixed feelings. IGN’s roundup of the reaction found Gleeks torn between delight and dread, with one commenter calling it “the best worst day of my life.” The official Glee account posted its own response on X.
The wariness has a history. IGN notes that the early seasons were as critically acclaimed as they were popular, but later ones leaned on shock plotlines and struggled to balance a rotating cast. That’s why the loudest worry is the cast list. One fan quipped that a revival with no cast announced is “just a really expensive school choir,” while others argue for luring back Jane Lynch, who won an Emmy in 2010 for playing Sue Sylvester.
Many of the replies to the announcement turn into tributes instead. IGN reports that fans are arguing against a reboot without the original cast, and one reply said the show without Naya Rivera would be like earth without water. Rivera, who played Santana Lopez, died in 2020.
The reboot also lands in a busy stretch of revivals at Disney. Hulu recently ordered Ryan Coogler’s X-Files reboot to series, and Disney+ is getting a Kingdom Hearts anime. With no cast, plot or release window confirmed for Glee, the next announcements will decide whether fans are actually keen.
When will the Glee reboot premiere?
No premiere date or episode count has been announced. Disney+ and Hulu have only confirmed the series order.
Who is returning for the Glee reboot?
Nothing is official yet. TheWrap reports that Lea Michele is in talks to play Rachel Berry again, and Heather Morris has teased Brittany’s return on Instagram. Murphy says he has spoken to about 10 original cast members.
Is Ryan Murphy involved?
Murphy says he wrote a script with original co-creators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan. Disney’s order announcement didn’t name any producers, but TheWrap says Murphy is behind the revival.
