Hulu has ordered Ryan Coogler’s The X-Files reboot to series, with Danielle Deadwyler and Himesh Patel leading a new pair of FBI investigators. As reported by IGN, the project brings together Disney’s Onyx Collective, 20th Television, and Coogler’s Proximity Media. It moves the paranormal drama beyond the pilot Coogler wrote, directed, and executive produced.

The Sinners and Black Panther filmmaker will executive produce the series, while Jennifer Yale serves as showrunner and executive producer. Original X-Files creator Chris Carter also joins the executive producers, alongside Proximity’s Zinzi Coogler and Sev Ohanian.

A new pair of agents opens the files

Deadline reports that Deadwyler and Patel play two highly decorated but very different FBI agents. They form an unlikely bond after an assignment to a long-shuttered division devoted to unexplained phenomena. That setup preserves the original show’s central investigative partnership while giving the new leads their starting point.

The supporting cast includes Steve Buscemi, Amy Madigan, Ben Foster, Devery Jacobs, Lochlyn Munro, Tantoo Cardinal, Joel D. Montgrand, and Sofia Grace Clifton. Tbreak previously covered Buscemi, Madigan, and Foster joining the reboot; the series order is the next development for that ensemble.

Coogler’s involvement spans the pilot’s script, direction, and production, rather than an executive-producer credit alone. In a statement quoted by Deadline, the filmmaker said: “What Chris Carter created is special, and we wanted to honor everything that made the original series connect with so many people while also finding our own way into that world.”

The musical connection also extends through Proximity Media. Deadline reports that co-founder Ludwig Göransson contributed the pilot’s score. Deadwyler and Patel serve as co-executive producers, alongside Proximity’s Simone Harris.

Carter remains involved in the franchise

The project has developed over more than three years under Coogler’s five-year exclusive television deal with Disney. Carter first discussed Coogler’s plans publicly in 2023, and now takes an executive-producing role in the new series.

The original The X-Files premiered on Fox in 1993, with Gillian Anderson’s Dana Scully and David Duchovny’s Fox Mulder investigating paranormal cases. Its initial run lasted nine seasons and produced two feature films, followed by a two-season television revival that began in 2016. The latest television chapter therefore brings a new lead pairing into a franchise that has already moved between television and cinema.

Carter has separately expressed interest in continuing the original storyline after season 11. His involvement in Coogler’s series adds a link to the original creative team, with Yale running the new production.
